It's finally happened. Yesterday I had my oral exam on my PhD thesis --- and I passed!

They said I gave a very good defense, and that I should re-publish the work I have published in a higher impact journal. Which was nice.

Anyway, I have a sore head after celebrating all yesterday, and I'll drag myself along to school to find out how many corrections I have later. Feels good to be finished, and to be a doctor! [Smile]

So, you've been doctored, orally?
They do that to sheep over here.

Let me add my voice to the concert of congratulations. (I wish I were there already...)

So, any plans for the future? Post-doc? Teacher? Lab (private or public) R&D? Any ways, if you got to that point, no doubt you can get anywhere you want! [Applause]

I think I prefer littlefish, PhD, but I'm not too bothered.

My first priority is to get the corrections made to my thesis, get it printed and bound, then placed in the library. I want to stay in chemical research, and I found out today I have an interview at the University of East Anglia (UEA) for a post-doc position there.

What I'd really like is to carry on the work that I did for my PhD. As soon as I got the system working, I had to write it up. I'd like to exploit the technology and investigate some more complex systems with my cells. To that note, I'm probably going to write a research proposal to get money from the EPSRC (government funding body) for a fancy IR spectrometer and my salary. Then I can try to push the technique to achieve ns time resolution and possibly observe transitional species, which would be nice. However, that takes around 6 months to get the money, and as I haven't been paid since October 2004, I really need to get a source of income.

Well done Dr Littlefish

BTW the UEA is only about 30 miles from me... Just up the A140!

Your thesis sounds fascinating (what's it mean though? [Smile] )

Congrats on making the grade - does it feel like all the work was worth it now?
