So I was on my other favorite forum earlier today and mentioned how 'Merkin has been used to identify American citizens, particularly by Australian-English--speakers. One older board member got really upset and offended and told me not to use that word around him again. I was thoroughly confused because the only reference for Merkin I had was chocolate. So, I did what any good Internet user should do: I looked it up. Lo and behold, I discovered this definition and etymology.

Am I the only person here who never knew of this definition for merkin?! And, this whole time, have we been unknowingly insulted by people using this word to label Americans?

Fairly recently (like in the last year or so) Someone here brought up that definition. Until then I had been in the dark as well. But really, is it any worse than septics? [Razz]

Rhonwynn, do you mean to say that, until now, you thought the Aussies and Brits were nice people who like Americans? [Eek!]

I suspect so.

btw - according to this link that use of 'merkin' to refer to merkins was coined by a merkin.

I was only aware of the ancient usage. I note that there seems to be some disagreement between the lexicographers as to what the practical use of a pubic wig was.

I've heard utterly stupid Brits use the term, I'm pretty sure they're just mocking the Texas accent instead of referring to us as pubic hair wigs.

It's as Dubya says it: "We are 'Merikens."

Don't feel bad Rhonwyyn, I didn't know what a merkin was either (until now).

But why would someone get upset over its usage? It seems to be a very obscure and archaic word.
