This morning, I was at the local Phillips 66 station buying a bottle of washer fluid on my way to work. As I went back to my car, I slipped on a patch of black ice...someting gave inside my left leg. and I collapsed on my back in pain, the bottle of washer fluid rolling away from me. I couldn't get up.

Fortunately, my cellphone was still attached to my belt, so I was able to call Pamela and get her help. A couple of bystanders helped me get up and seat myself in my car, and I was able to see that my left kneecap was substantially displaced. Eventually, Pamela arrived, and we wound up calling the paramedics.

At Aurora South Medical Center, they fixed my dislocated kneecap and wrapped my leg up in a big brace. Now, for the next couple of days, I'm on crutches, as well as Vicodin. Fortunately, I can sleep on the couch out in the living room, and I have my laptop, Xbox, Palm, and cellphone with me.

Anyway, it sucks to be me right now.

Arrrggghhh

I had a torn ligament in my knee once and that was nasty enough...

Take it easy and be thankful that you're unlikely to suffer any permanent ill effects (except maybe a lightly weaker knee...)

Get better soon Erbo

Yikes! Believe it or not, one of my first calls as a certified EMT was for a dislocated knee, and yeah, that guy was hurting.

Like BW says, do what your doctors tell you. Do not push it or rush it or do anything that's going to make it worse.

Damn!

As a few people know I did that myself just about 6 months ago. I hope you heal fast. I know how much that hurts.

The bad part is the pain never goes away completely. It just hangs around in the background. Go easy on that knee and as soon as possible start working it.

And... Mmmm Vicodin with a Jack and Coke please.

Oh dear, sorry to hear about that. Did the words "disability insurance" flash through your mind as you were on the ground? I gotta get that!

I tore a ligament a few years back, and the memories of the whole ordeal still makes me shiver. I didn't take enough advantage of painkillers, I think. It's weird, eh, how you can't get up?

Are you supposed to be standing on your leg, or walking? I heard that when people do that soon after a knee injury they recover much quicker? Wish I had done that.

Hey, you could take up knitting! [Big Grin]

I'm improving...I can put some weight on the leg, though I still need crutches to get around. Mostly, it's just really sore.

Incidentally...the ice patch was formed by a downspout drain that emptied onto the asphalt right next to the small parking area. One of the firefighters (or so Pamela told me) wondered why they hadn't at least put sand on that area, and sanded it himself.

Never mind the disability insurance...

Where are the ambulance chasers when you need one? "Had an accident? We'll find someone to persecute (and get rich doing it...)"

No Rhonwyyn "persecute' was a deliberate gag...

(perhaps you don't get the endless "no win, no fee" "where there's blame there's a claim" "100% compensation guaranteed" TV ads we do in the UK?)

Yes, I know your Yank lawyers invented it...

Yeah, where are those pukenacious* solicitors when you need them? They could've slapped a lawsuit on that puppy...!

Lawyers are still called solicitors on your side of the pond, right?

I'm improving gradually. I can put some weight on my leg, but can't bend it very much, even when it's free of the brace. I have an orthopedist appointment tomorrow morning.

I'll probably be out from work until Monday, as I can't drive with this leg brace. (Even though it's my left leg, and my car's an automatic, my leg won't fit in the footwell if it can't bend.)

Meanwhile, I was able to rip some CDs for Pamela (she put them into my computer in the computer room, and I did the ripping using an ssh connection from the living room), so I don't feel entirely useless.

Try putting your leg out the window. [Big Grin]

Reminds me of this Japanese tourist I saw up here one summer driving downtown with a friggin' whitewater kayak inside his Ford Tempo rental. A third was occupying the rear passenger area with a third sticking out each backseat window. I can't imagine how he didn't take out a pedestrian.

Ooooh, baby... what a nasty pickle, Erbo. I hope that Vicodin is doing its job - good stuff, that is [Razz] . I took it for my gum grafts (roughly 1 yr. ago) and will be doing so once again in about a week when I get my wisdom teeth pulled.

*Singing and clapping* "Get well, get well soon, we want you to get well!" Happy days, Erb! [Smile]
