What do you guys feel is the best way to approach geek guys? I was just at Revenge of the Sith and there were these cute guys who kept sort of checking be out, I was still dressed up sexy from hanging out with my friends earlier, but I didn't have the nerve to say anything to them. (and they obviously didn't either) I would like to know how to approach guys in this sort of situation.

Hmm...well, I thought you had a boyfriend already...ho hum...at any rate, I don't know. /me considered asking someone about seeing said movie, but as if I needed more reasons not to, I have a funny feeling she'd laugh at the idea, calling it 'nerdy.' Meh.

You might be surprised, I was out at Goth club on Friday night, and everyone there was talking about Ep III, much to my surprise.

I'm just wondering if Zimet was wearing that slave outfit bikini from Ep VI, that would explain a lot of the attention [Wink]

Yes, I had a boyfriend, but I broke up with him for reasons I've had to explain a million times over and don't want to again. No gold bikini (I did consider it though [Wink] ). Denim mini-skirt, lacy spagetti strap tank with red bra and birkenstocks, shoes of the gods.

Well, I don't know - for a variety of reasons, I don't suppose it would actually hurt to ask in a few days...it's probably a very bad idea, though. I'd previously given up on this particular case, and I really should stick to my gut feeling on it. Then again...

Zimet: Send hot pix!!1! [Wink] Well, do keep in mind that you might have been the first flesh & blood female they've seen in quite awhile, so that might have helped things out a bit - and your attire sounded nice enough. [Smile]

Nope, still not getting it. You'll have to post a pic to illustrate [Wink]

Seriously, look at it from a probability point of view. Star Wars liking guys don't tend to have girlfriends[1], not due to lack of interest in having one. So the probability of any rejection happening to you by approaching random guys is pretty low. And trust me, if I was in a Star Wars queue, and started getting chatted up by some young lady, I'd take it as a compliment.

As for the mechanics of what sort of line to use, well, that's another story, and one I have no knowledge of. You can try funny or honest and simple, whatever works, I guess.

[1]Yeah, it's a generalisation, and I can't prove it. But look into your heart, you know I'm right [Wink]

Indeed. And trust me, this is not the sort of crowd you'd expect to be into Star Wars. I was blown away. Shame I didn't know the group discussing it, or I could have joined in.

Clearly, they've succumbed to the power of the Dark Side.

Zimet, it is difficult to know exactly how to answer the question. I hope I can provide a little insight from a personal, naive standpoint.

As csk has already mentioned, the stereotypical geek guy is usually reserved amongst people they do not know and fairly shy, so chances are that initiating contact for them may be too daunting for them. So, to have an attractive lady come up to them and to start chatting, would solve that problem.

So you should not be afraid of just approaching them. When I go out, I am too shy and introvert to introduce myself and deep down I hope someone comes up to me and says "Hello".

As to what you can say, well, I suppose for a geek (and probably men in general) conversation is geared more towards facts and information. So, think of a few questions which yields discussable answers (i.e. the one mentioned by Koboldskind, if you are at movie) and then take things from there. If you immedaitely go up to them and say "hey, you look great" it could well throw them off balance.

Hope I have been relatively direct in my answer and that I haven't mis-interpreted your question nor segued off topic

Go up to them, dressed as you were, and say "Hi! I'm a girl!"

They'll be putty in your hands.

make small talk with them, and then tell them you were just thinking about grabbing a bite to eat (whether this is true or not is irrelevant). Ask them if they'd like to come along, and voila!! success!!

It would help, though, if there were more than one of you if there is more than one of them. Maybe bring some of your friends along? There's nothing more frustrating than trying to talk to some girl and having your /quote buddies /quote keep trying to one-up you.

The biggest Star Wars fiends I know are goths. The girl who works coat check at the local industrial night here has the Imperial crest tattooed on her neck, and recently shaved her head for a Twi'lek costume.

I suspect it has something to do with the draw of the Dark Side and the whole Death Star chic of the original trilogy.

You know, if I knew how to effectively post pics on the internet I would put one up for you guys, but I am technologically inept. Posting is the extent of my computer skillz. Give me a good old 35mm Nikon and a dark room and I'm set. Come by The Splash Page in MT sometime and you'll see me in all my scowling glory. [Smile]

You know, you can get those photos scanned from the negatives (or slides). Even those people still shooting film seem to be moving towards just developing then scan to digital workflows rather than film based ones.

Yes. Scan them, then upload them to a webserver, then post them with their URL.

it doesn't matter what you say- speak and one of two things will happen, they'll think you are nuts, blind, or trying to make fools of them (that is one thing)
or
you will immediately have a cult following
