Well, for those who don't believe in anythign, then why do all cultures believe in something. religion has been universal throughout all human history.

There's also history - many people are subjected to it and it's all they've ever known, so why change things?

This is all quite novel to a Chinese friend of mine who was never raised with religion. [Razz]

Folks who have been 'steeped' in it may have little reason to question it, look at other options, or they may just really enjoy the community that surrounds it.

Keep in mind that in Sverige, it's a bit more commonplace to put religion aside than it is here (even if you have an official church and we don't), and far more so than some heated parts of the world. (The idea of the deep hatred between Sunnis & Shiites is quite insane to me - they practically hate each other more than they do other religions [which they don't seem terribly keen on either]).

And for whatever it's worth, they say folks who are religious may be slightly healthier, as their resignation to fate reduces stress.

Personally, I'll stick with the slightly shorter life, sure of the fact that whenever I meet my demise, that'll be that. Nothing more, nothing less. (Unless science proves otherwise, which will be awfully challenging. Or if Captain Jack shares his magic elixir w/us - but Miracle Day would actually be quite bad...)

What is the point of religion?

Did man create God in mans image, or as the scriptures?

Are the Judeo-Christian accounts near valid?

With out knowing your back ground I really do not know how to answer, your question. Until 1964 I considered my self as a Christian, then my country decided that I should be in the Armed Forces. I chose the Navy because it looked safer. Whoops all the openings for my state were taken for the next six months, so I asked if I could become a Hospital-corpsman. Front of the line get on the bus. I did not know that the US Marine Corps is a Branch of the Navy, and guess where they get their Medics.

Lets say I have seen many people die of natural causes (old age) and from acts of war. Human suffering and carnage that if told graphically enough would cause you to vomit. I have watched people go very peacefully and fighting and cursing to their last breath. From my years of experience I believe that there is a higher power. Mock me if you must however I am at peace with myself, each night I go to bed thanking the Lord for what has been given to me.

So there you have some of my position on religion.
