I just plain don't understand "The Land Of The Free".

Cops snooping on your photos and text messages is ok, but providing universal health care is 'Tyranny'

There's be a frakkin' revolution if the cops here tried that shit.

Translation: they scan the phones of every hot teenage girl they encounter, hoping to find naughty pictures she sent to her boyfriend.

Important FYI:
quote:
Update on April 20 at 11:50 p.m.: The Michigan State Police later issued a statement saying that it only uses the data-extraction devices after obtaining a search warrant or consent from a cell phone's owner. See our story here for more details.

Read more: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20055431-1.html

I was about to write all fire and brimstone that "it's patently illegal/unconstitutional to pull that data off a cell phone during a traffic stop. If I was stopped in Michigan, I'd feel compelled to declare that I did not have a cell phone, as my rights would be thoroughly violated otherwise."

However, it appears some things were misconstrued, and the point of the ACLU suit is to learn more about WTF is going on, and what the device does.

Furthermore, I would point out that the title of this thread needs some punctuation - "Geeks: Don't drive in Michigan!" Otherwise, simply reading "geeks don't drive in Michigan" perplexed me, as I know GC has a number of geeks in MI, and they all drive (and/or have their vehicles fail on them). [Razz]

Perish the thought, MMKK. [Smile]

Actually, I was thinking of Sprocket's "company car." =P

Yeah, I've seen how cops obtain 'consent' ("mind if I come in?" as they push their way through the door) and how hard it is to withhold consent even when you know your rights - I once spent about 20 minutes 'not consenting' to a random search by the cops (within sight of my front gate) before they gave up.

At a routine traffic stop the cops have lots of ways of obtaining 'consent' - eg threatening you with trumped-up speeding charges, wondering out loud if your tyres and brakes are roadworthy, (if the cop says they're not, you can't drive the car till they're fixed - which means you're stranded at the side of the highway in the middle of the night and will probably have to pay to get the car towed) hinting that your breath smells of alcohol...

How many teenage cheerleaders are going to stand up to that kind of pressure?

____ Just for grins I searched for the iPhone EULA then used find "Location", No I did not read the whole document.

____ Seems to me just turning the thing on puts you at risk.

____ Non-Disclosure agreements aside they own you.
