From NPR: Military incursions into Pakistan meant to capture bin Laden by election day

It seems King George is attempting to win the election for McCain by finally going whole hog after bin Laden.

According to sources for the NPR article, questions have been raised in the intelligence community and on Capitol Hill about the political intent of these maneuvers.

quote:
Both sources say those in the intelligence community and on Capitol Hill are raising questions about the political intent of this new aggressive stance.

"The question is," said one of the sources, "Why wasn't this done a year ago?"

Um, because it was too early to rig the election?

The thing that royally ticks me off about all this, assuming Bush is actually successful, is that a vast quantity of Americans will eat this up and believe the Republicans are the saviours of democracy and liberty, McCain will win and we can all kiss what little civil liberties we still enjoy down the fscking toilet.

Or two, three, four, five, six, or seven years ago. Yeesh.

And here I thought we actually had bin Laden locked up somewhere and the BA would trot him out to shoot silly videos whenever they thought their numbers were slipping. [Roll Eyes]

Isn't this what Obama said to do, months ago?

Just like the "talking to your enemies" thing that was so ridiculed by the Repubs until they decided to try it?

"We" are going into Pakistan now because they "had the chance" to stop the Taliban within their borders, and now they have "clearly failed" to make good on a promise not to be a (major) base for the Taliban.

quote:
from the NPR article:
The plan is part of an effort to kill or capture ... top al-Qaida leaders

another news article (September 08, 2008):
"Today, if violent extremism and terrorism have a centre, it is Pakistan...." said Anthony Cordesman, an analyst at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. US intelligence worries that Al Qaeda is using its Pakistani safe havens to prepare for attacks on the West.

FYI: Saying "we're going after Osama bin Laden" is a "freebie." -- The real reason for the attacks is that government of Pakistan is apparently incapable of doing anything against the Taliban.

Of course it's a freebie... Mccain himself said:
"Look, I know the area, I've been there, I know wars, I know how to win wars, and I know how to improve our capabilities so that we will capture Osama bin Laden -- or put it this way, bring him to justice... We will do it, I know how to do it."

So obviously he told the Bush administration exactly how to capture Osama bin Laden. He just umm... forgot to explain how for the last seven years. But he's on the job now (or will be when he offers a tax break to Diebold and gets 'voted' into office) so just sit back, relax and don't worry about it.
