Well, it seems it is that time of year. In my neck of the woods all the political signs are making their way to everyones' yard. This morning I awoke to my neighbors' house being toilet papered, and a couple of days before that a house down the road was egged. Next week who knows what it will be. Why can't we all just get along? [Eek!]

...And that my fellow forum members is why I don't advertise who I plan to vote for.

Because knowing that the supporters of Party X are a bunch of childish vandals really makes me want to vote for Party X.

Too bad it isn't party X. But parties X and Y, working in harmonious discord to get all of the undecided voters to sway to the side that has right on their side.

How much on the political landscape would be different?

I think the Independents would have coalesced into a formal political party with much infighting, bad blood and general lack of common direction as the party would have been populated with those from all over the political spectrum. In time, though, small groups would have split off, leaving the core of the Independent Party most likely fairly centrist. Now, assuming those candidates started actually winning elections, I'd bet there would have been a concerted effort from the Democrats and Republicans to discredit the Independents and their party by planting unsavory scandals/rumors. Barring any success there, we might actually have a fairly healthy 3-party political system and Al Gore would have been President for the last 8 years. [Big Grin]

Well, According to Duverger's law, a three-party system will ultimately result in a two party system, at the death of one of the pre-existing parties. That or two of the others merge together. I don't think there are many instances of a long lasting, healthy three party system.
