Don't pick it up !

1. Drop gun in public place
2. Shoot whoever picks it up.
3. ???
4. Profit.

Picking a gun up off the street would be a bad idea even if you didn't get shot. 99.99% chance it's evidence in a crime and if you pick it up you would have quite a few questions to answer even if you report it. Best thing to do is note the area call 911 and tell them where the gun is.

In the Sectarian violence in Iraq right now, fighteres are going into houses dragging children into the street and lighting them on fire. If I were a widowed mother, I would want a gun and probably couldn't afford to buy one. ANd then one day walking down the street Allah blesses you with an AK-47.

How do these snipers know that they aren't just picking off widowed mothers that want to prtect thier starving children from unspeakable violence.

The snipers are playing judge jury and executioner. Should merely picking up a weapon in Iraq be a capitol crime. I would say that the peopel picking up these weapons want to defend themselves more than they want to kill others. especially with the stories on military contractors killing innocent civilians with impunity.

Or don't want their children picking them up.

I'm sure they would much prefer to call 911 and have the friendly neighborhood PD come collect the firearms off the sidewalk like CG suggested, but...

Well I didn't have time to read the article at the time but it sounded like some stupid gang initiation. Of course they have an entirely different problem over there. It's plain entrapment. You pick up a gun in the street so you intend to use it against me so I shoot you. That's like punching some random guy because their hand is closed. Hey he might have hit me first. [shake head]

This is fscking retarded.

First, any decent human being seeing a weapon in the middle of the street would consider taking it and disposing of it in some way or another.

Second, this really pisses me off. A soldiers job is to do what he is told. Immediate obedience to orders is a large part of the worlds most successful military orders since the time of the Spartans. Who do you prosecute? Is the soldier on the trigger the one at fault or was it the Officer who ordered such a ridiculous tactic to be used.

Part of the military command structure is general guidance at the officer level and specific orders at the troop leaders level. Part of being a troop leader is knowing when to tell your Captain to fsck off when they issue orders like that to protect your troops from stupid crap like this and to cover your bum because in reality the troop is only liable for his actions if he wasn't ordered to act.

The lack of leadership here is disappointing.

Note: I apologize for the edited profanities. I was a little heated.

Ashitaka:
Carrying an AK-47 is not a crime in Iraq. Everyone is allowed to carry one AK-47 and have up to two magazines of ammunitions in/on their weapon/person. Hostile intent is only considered if the weapon is pointed at coalition forces with intent (meaning if they're bending over and accidentally flag blue forces that doesn't constitute hostile intent) however, what these guys are baiting the Iraqi's with are "bomb making materials" and stuff like that. Which, being in possession of, does institute questionable intent in which case the detaining and questioning of an individual is called for.
