None of those are saying that "ries" is a word by itself - all the results are words with -ries as the ending of the plural.

That's exactly what I found -- for example, the first listing under that link above is for the word "Lachrymatory", then it lists the plural form, "pl. -ries", meaning "lachrymatories". The other 18 entries are similar. So I think the last word is "riel" until we get a ruling from The Powers That Be. Powers...? [Wink]

5. No words unfit for Scrabble (i.e. proper names etc.)

Scrabble doesn't allow prefixes and suffixes, so it isn't allowed unless a definition for "ries" as a whole word can be found. That leaves the current word as riel.
