On a more serious note, Asus is releasing what they call EEE PC in early August - essentially a fully functional Linux-based ultraportable for $200. If you don't get one donated [Wink] by that time, that might work for you.

my boss runs a non-profit that builds computers for the needy. The latest batch (made just this past weekend) is going to soldiers/military families. I don't know anything about if they've already been found homes but you could look at Kramden.org, maybe.
