While stationed in New England I needed eight hours of flight time, I had already been paid for those hours so I needed to get some recorded.

I got a ride aboard a Lockheed P2V all weather recon. plane. The group flying the plane were storm busters, they would on purpose fly into storms. Well, I was not ready for what came into play as we flew out over the North Atlantic. I got to see Ball Lightning, Saint Elmos Fire, and all the metal surfaces in the plane were glowing blue/green. The magnetic compass was spinning, none of the radios worked, and the normal crew was joking about the Noob on board. The flight plan was to fly from Quonset point Rhode Island towards Scotland, punch through then turn around and fly back through the storm.

I can not imagine what the passengers and crew aboard the Air France flight went through. Once we got back on the ground I vowed to never ride with with this group again.

cool story MoMan, that must have been wild (and terrifying).

Yeah, I just hope the crew and passengers were unconscious. [Frown]

Could a better system be used? Ham radio operators have ARPS we use this to locate one another and track storms, send E-Mail and other things. The system ties GPS, Maps, and Weather all together.

Trucking companies can track their Semis, track idle time, even if their truck is parked out side of a topless bar. So why don't the AirLines adopt proven Tech?

While it may not prevent an accident it could shorten SAR time.
