____ Once they turn on CERN should we doing roll calls to see if we are still all here, I mean when the Alps fall into themselves, some of us may turn up missing.

I just got back from the Alps. They were definitely there, though the Matterhorn's been in hiding (right when I wanted to climb it too [Frown] ).

When does the LHC finish cooling, anyway?

Professor Brian Cox of the University of Manchester, and an employee of CERN on the LHC project, has been reported confirming that there is no chance that the LHC will endanger civilisation by creating black holes that destroy the planet...

Xanthine - cooling is complete - all the way to -271 degrees C. Full steam ahead (if I may mix my metaphors) for Wednesdays switch-on. [Smile]

Definitely Helen - I wonder if Prof Cox's academic papers are as eloquent as his interviews?? [Big Grin]

So who's up for an "End Of The World Party" on Tuesday night?

Mo-Man

I recall reading a short story where a scientist from some kind of lab like CERN stopped at a bar, removed his Rolex watch and was staring at it while he drank heavily.

When the person telling the story asked the scientist what he was doing the scientist asked back, "If you made a mistake and realized because of it the world would end in an hour, would you tell anybody?"

The scientist left the Rolex at the bar.

A little reassurance for TheMoMan - having spent $5bn (or some similar humungous stack of cash) the CERN scientists have had a bit of a think and decided that the LHC is perfectly safe, and there will be a Thursday this week after all....

i am reminded of the top scientists who first looked at the "looking glass" that some upstart had claimed to observe the planets through who stared at the glass of the telescope from arms length and declared that the inventor was deceived by demons.

....just saying. [Big Grin]

Of course, this was just a warm up. The real fun happens in October.

A less succinct version of Def. Helen's link, but groovy nonetheless.

For this caveman programmer/sysadmin, the above story gave me a considerably better understanding of just what is being done. That, and I just took a refresher course from the lovely Ms. alpkinekat. ;P

Forwarded to me:   [Eek!]   [Big Grin]
quote:
Hello, I am from approximately two months in the future.

On 10/22 at approx 2:34am CET a tachyon field failure in the main resonating ring of the LHC causes a "temporal blowback". Shortly thereafter, the resulting destruction of the strong nuclear force causes the world to vaporize in seconds, while a few of us near the experiment are thrown into a temporal causality loop.

While the predestination event (or as we have come to call it "The Big Rewind") hasn't occurred yet to you, for us it is about three years in our past. I came across your site looking to see if there were any other scientists that may have theorized this phenomenon who may be of assistance in preventing it. This brings me to my point, I have repeatedly checked your site for the past five rewinds at 2:34:01 CET and it still says nope, believe me at this point the LHC has most assuredly destroyed the world. I can provide a bank account in Nigeria for the funds to be placed. I am curious to the exact amount however.
