Those were raw pictures. Maybe they hadn't got the color data yet. I'm not sure, but I think they add that later.

Edit: This article confirms that. [Wink]

Poor old Beagle. Looking at the pics I think that perhaps it is because Mars is just too boring for a wonderful UK robot and it just couldn't be bothered.

Or perhaps it is because the UK team did not have enough powerbooks.

Still it's nice to see the Yanks celebrating something that doesn't involve killing people. [Wink]

There's a Java program developed by NASA called Mars 24 that shows the landing sites of all the different Mars missions and shows the time on Mars with a display of the planet. Pretty cool. [Beard of Peter Gabriel!] [thumbsup]

Like the Falklands? India? Oh, oh, yes. Um, Northern Ireland. Yes, definitely. Northern Ireland.

We're all kidding... right? [Wink]

So, how did NASA manage it this time?

Did they re-calibrate all their instruments in cubits to avoid confusion?

btw - remember that really cool footage of the bunch of balloons bouncing down?
An in-duh-vidual at work thought that was actual footage of the real thing, until I asked how he thought they got a camera there first to film it.

PBS had a NOVA special on the Mars lander: Spirit. Very interesting.

They had to go through an awful lot to get it where it ended up. Gusev crater is very significant scientifically, as scientists believe it might have, at one point, been a lake -- the place to look for life. They had to redesign the parachute and inflatable balloon system.

What a wonderful opportunity for all scientists (from all over the world) to work together with the data that is being collected. To me, I'm not actually caring one way or the other who put up what Mars Rover as much as the data coming back. That's the exciting part.
