Some geeks in California are taking used computers and recycling them, loading them with Linux and shipping them to South America. Salon has the story.

Speaking of recycling computers a friend and I managed to clean up our home offices on Saturday by taking some of our useless old crap to the keepitgreen.org collection center. When we pulled up with the back of my battered pickup bulging with CPUs and monitors strapped in with ropes, the look on the volunteers faces was priceless. I just wonder what the refurbishers are going to do with the NeXTs, Sparcs, dye sublimation printers, 35mm negative scanners and other oddball hardware mixed in with the old Mac and Wintel hardware (mostly with old linux distros loaded on them of course). Oh well I don't care what they do with it as long as I have room to accumulate more new hardware. I have to try not to think about how much all the stuff I gave away cost me originallythough or I start to think about how I need to pick cheaper addictions like heroin or something.

Ooooh dye-sub printers and 35mm scanners! I wish I'd been there! [Frown]

A ream of paper for the dye-sub costs more than a cheap ink-jet printer and the quality of the ink-jet is several times better. The equipment that I spent tens of thousands of dollars on over the years, isn't even worth operating anymore. [Big Grin]

Sadly, even knowing that, I was not able to convince myself to get rid of the 1200 DPI 12"x19" laser printer even though I have not used it for a year since it would need a $500 developer cartridge to print properly and I can do quite a few service bureau prints for that. Nor was I able to give up my film recorder with its 4"x5", 35mm, and Polaroid backs even though I can just click a button in iPhoto and have prints sent to me that look better with a lot less hassle than booting into Mac OS 8 on a SCSI based Mac ( I could continue with a litany of addtional obsolete hardware surrounding me but I think you get the idea). Oh well at least I was able to fool people into mistaking my advanced technology for talent for a few years. [Wink]

You got rid of a NeXT station?!? There's some needy geeks out here who wouldn't mind it if a NeXT station just happened on their doorstop. [Smile]
