how would one go about getting a webpage for oneself?

i've been on some of yours and they're quite interesting. me want! i don't care how technical i would have to become, i would quite like one. no soul-selling though, i draw the line there. [Smile] and do you have to pay for the privelige(sp)? i just have a whole lot of random tings that i'd love to waffle on about here, but would probably piss everyone off if i did so!

so, a little webpage for the spoon... who can help? (btw, i know nothing. oh, i should make that my sig. i say it far too often...)

I made sites for myself and my sister on geocities. I'm working on my sister's mostly right now: http://www.geocities.com/queen_cassiopeia
I hand write my own html code (noone peek at my source code!! [blush] ) and make my own graphics, but geocities has templates to help you if you don't know anything about html.
I have NO money to get my site hosted. Thats why I use a crappy free site with ads [Razz]

There's also Angelfire [which is where my site is]. It's free and has a "basic" html editor thingy that will pretty much guide you through making your page.

You're HTML is weak! You must be punished!

Yeah, I got a site written in php... www.portland.co.uk provides sites with free php support. The downside is that they are *very* unreliable. Well, their free service is anyway...

Yeah, I've been thinking the same for the same reason Jess, but that would require me to have the nerve to actually show the world something I wrote.

As much as I hate Ginsberg's other works... I like this one, for a number of reasons. It was written to sock, when shocking poetry was not quite yet a norm, (now shock poetry isn't very powerful -- as it is way over used) and was very much against the grain. Ginsberg is generally too liberal (as in the modern libreal, not as in the 60's-70's liberal) for my tastes, and some the "love" poems belong to the art pornography and not poetry.

Anywho I digress.

don't worry MTB babe my source code is more elementary than yours. the only reason i have cascading style sheets on my blog is because i begged a computer genius to help me with my website...

spoonie if you're getting a site on angelfire then pick the advanced editor, even if you have to learn a little HTML. HTML isn't that hard to learn, and as you can clearly see from MTB babe's website, it doesn't take a lot of fancy stuff to make a website look nice. basic editor really doesn't allow you to do anything. if you just want a blog then there are plenty out there...blurty, livejournal, or xanga to name a few.

btw i DO straight-code my site :-p

Herm... I have lots of space at TCTQ.net... and I know a little about the whole HTML thing... and the php thing... and the cascading style sheets thing... no ads or anything... thought I might mention that as I just happened to read this... Should I be saying this in the open... hermm...

Spoon -

ICDsoft has a pretty decent price if you want the no advertising no banners kind of service. It's $65 a year, and that includes your domain name registration. Their tech support is really good, too.

If you want to make your own page, I recommend starting with a book on HTML (I like O'Reilly books myself, but going to a bookstore and browsing until you find something you are comfortable with is the best way to pick one) and an easy editor (FrontPage if you must, but I like 1st Page 2000 - and it's free.) As long as you look at the source, you will start to pick it up.

Good Luck. =)

O'Reilly books are the best, they have many on learning HTML and web development along with everything else.. I have been able to find some really good prices on used O'Reilly books on Amazon.com and they came in brand new condition. You can also check www.oreilly.com and see which books they have. Plus, there are many good (free)turorials and sites on the web for learning web design.. Search around on Google.

If you want free but with ads I suggest some of the sites people have already posted here. I particularly like www.freeservers.com. If you don't mind paying I suggest www.your-site.com.

If you don't mind paying a buck or two a month I can hook you up for your own domain or as long as it's not that much traffic and storage (less than 5 megs storage) then i'll put you up on my server at spoongirl.stonewallcs.com or whatever.

Who do you get your Internet access from Spoongirl? If you dial up from home, you might have some free web space provided by whichever ISP (company) you use (eg freeserve, NTL, Tiscali etc). Check their web page to see if it says anything.
