No idea.../me thinks of the Mozilla term for the 'loading' icon in the toolbar, which is "throbber." I don't suppose you're looking to make a replacement one, are you?

Maybe by staring at it the answer will come. Though I have heard the term "Throbber" used before.

"I move for no man (No, not even the king of the britons)"
"Spinning grayscale pinwheel of death"?
"Busy"
"Shut up, I'm loading as fast as i can"

Though I suppose only the third may be the technical name if any of them are [Smile]

according to The Apple Support Site it's called a 'progress indicator'.

There's this thing called the World Wide Web, apparently it has all sorts of usefull stuff on it. Maybe you should check it out. [evil]

If that's a "progress indicator" how come it doesn't indicate the amount of progress?

And why do they call them 'credit cards', when my account's always in debit?

It is called an indeterminate progress indicator- to show that progress is being made. It stops you thinking that the computer has locked up, but doesn't tell you how much longer the machine needs to think (an indeterminate time), probably because the answer is unknown.

My first thought is that it looks like an orphaned Macromedia product logo. But it clearly needs a nickname, because "indeterminate progress indicator" just isn't catchy enough.

Here are my suggestions:
- ceiling fan
- circling sharks
- The Circle of Rice (sung to the tune of that song from the Lion King)
- warp tunnel (picture it filling your entire screen with a spaceship shooting through the middle)
- Aztec hypnotic device
- The Ring (once you've seen it, all your applications will die within a week)

"CIPI the Spin-Head !"
(pronounce "sip E.")
Circular Indeterminate Progress Indicator (CIPI) sounds kinda' neat. I'm going to have to add that to all of my programs now! [Razz]

How about "George In Iraq"

because it goes round and round in circles and never gets anywhere.

On second thoughts, how about "The Famous Druid" ?

Perhaps we could call the "progress indicator":
* The gerbil wheel - Would fit the popular view people have of processors.
* The record - It spins me "right round, like a record..." [Smile]
* Stonehenge
* The terminator - It Just Will Not Stop!
* rotating pi [Big Grin]

Thank you Super Flippy!

It turns out some previous co-workers and I were known as Web Gerbs for similar reasons... (If only they provided those inverted water bottles with each cubicle. [crazy] )

I also liked your reference to The Ring, though I would add that it wouldn't effect the Mac's uptime as Mac OS X is nice about resisting crashes. [Big Grin] I am also wondering if installing OS X is anything like "making a copy". [crazy]

May the source be with you,

Well,
there are twelve markers in the circle
And this thing replaces the watch indicator
Could it then be a high class watch thing ?

just my idea anyway

I know I don't have one of those throbbers.

but then you all know that... [Frown]
