I'm a 20 year old geek moving from NY to TN in a few days. I was just wondering if anyone in the area knows of any good tech jobs?

I have experience in tech support, graphic/web design, hardware, and other stuff (resume available if needed)

Any ideas?

Run. Run now. Run fast and hard and don't look back. Memphis is a black hole. It sucks you in, and it's extremely hard to claw your way out.

*grew up in Memphis*

You might try AutoZone and see if they still need Help Desk technicians to do phone support. That was my last job before I left Memphis last year. Avoid Stream like the plague (if they are even still around).

Beyond that, good luck. I have tons of friends who are techs, web designers, and assorted geeks of different skills that are still unemployed in Memphis because they can't find jobs in the tech field. Some had to suck it up and take foodservice or grocery store positions just to pay the bills. Last time I looked for a job there, it was nigh impossible to find one. The only reason I did was because I knew someone who worked there and they got me in the door for an interview.

Good luck Sinn, sounds like you're going to need it...

'fraid I can't offer any practical hints except to ask if you've checked out addiew's plea from the heart thread:

Seems like you're in a similar-ish situation, maybe some of the ideas in there will be of some use...

(At the age of 47, in my first full time IT job, I'm a bit paranoid about all this tech job uncertainty thing and my heart goes out to all my fellow geeks who are struggling to pay the bills - especially as it seems that the UK follows the US in these kind of economic peaks and troughs...)

I'm not too certain about Memphis, but the tech job market here in Nashville is more depressing than Marvin's auto-biography. I can only assume that this is also the case in Memphis, else all of us would be migrating west. Still, you make your own opportunities. I'm sure that if you've the drive for it, you can find something there.
