Were these Canadian or American ships? Just curious.

The aircraft carrier was American, I don't think Canada has an aircraft carrier that big. The frigate/destroyer may have been Canadian though, it was certainly in Canadian waters.

It may have been a joint maneuver thing... it was amazing to see the destroyer keep turning on a dime like that.

My Dad was in the Navy, so I kind of have an interest in those sort of things. He was on a Destroyer Escort in WW II.

Hey Snaggy, Canada has no, that's right, none, nada, zip, in the way of aircraft carriers. The best we can do is provide a floating target for our ailing Sea Kings to aim for.

However, the latest frigates are pretty cool. I visited the ship yard in New Brunswick a while back and the assembly procedure is so precise it'll blow your mind. No banana rockets here! I watched one doing donuts in Vancouver harbour a while back. Scared the hell out some tugboats!

I thought that all the Canadian Navy had was 2, maybe 3 canoes?

Hey! That is not the Canadian Navy, that is the Swiss Navy!

(And yes, we do actually have one, only they are very good at camoflage. Proof is that we have never seen any of their ships [Big Grin] )

That is the most offensive picture I have ever seen....

The Canadian Navy doesn't carry guns!!!!
[Wink]

But seriously folks... despite older equipment and the occasional teasing, our navy does a great job... they patrol the world's longest coastline you know!

Besides, I saw it with my own eyes... the wimpy US aircraft carrier had to get the Canadian Frigate to make sure the Strait was safe before it would come out. [Wink]

Have you ever seen bathtub races? Literally, take a claw foot tub (one of the nice ones), and stick a little outboard on it. Now go play in the ocean...and don't forget your hat!

As for Canada having the longest coastline, Snaggy, I think you could say that it's infinitely long, being a fractal and all that. But then, you could also say that all coastlines are infinitely long, just different sizes of inifity. But Canada's is just a little longer...

Reminds me of a story I heard about the US aircraft carrier Yorktown.

Yorktown was on maneuvers in the North Atlantic one night when it saw a light about ten miles off the bow. The light was on a steady course right for Yorktown's nose. The comm officer got on the radio and hailed the light .. "This is US vessel to unknown vessel off our bow, please adjust your course ten degrees starboard. Over."

The light responded .. "This is Canadian Coast Guard to US vessel, please veer thirty degrees starboard. Over."

The comm officer repeated the command .. "This is a United States military vessel to Canadian ship, please adjust your course ten degrees to starboard to avoid collision. Over."

The Canadian replied, "This is Canadian Coast Guard to US Navy vessel, please adjust your course thirty degrees to starboard to avoid collision. Over."

The comm officer lost his patience, and shouted into the handset: "This is the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS Yorktown to the Canadian Coast Guard vessel off our bow. Please adjust your course ten degrees starboard to avoid a goddamn collision! Over!"

The Canadian answered, "Yorktown, this is a Canadian lighthouse...."

lol!!!!!

I recently read a book about the Navy and being female, this proved to be an exhausting task!I couldn't understand most of what I was reading.I came across words/abbreviations or whatever they are like AN/SQS,COMCRUDESLANT, OOD [Eek!] ...I still don't know what most of them means but all in all, it was a damn fine book! [Wink]

Don't know what being female has to do with recognizing acronyms. Of the three you mention, the only one I would hazard a guess on is COMCRUDESLANT, and that's only because I'm vaguely familiar with some Naval acronym conventions.

COMmander, CRUisers and DEStroyers, AtLANTic fleet

But even there, it's on the COM and the LANT part that I'm sure of.

Frankly, if there's not a table of acronyms, or if the acronyms aren't spelled out on their first use, then the author did a very poor job.

There's also Navpers (Naval personal), Cincpac (Commander in Chief Pacific), Bupers (Bureau of Personel) and Nincompoop (no explaination need). Wow! I think this has been the longest thread on the NitroSnagCam forum. You ought to invite the Navy to do more maneuvers! [Wink]
