With all the different shows out, I've really been into Gene Simmons Family Jewels. Is it a sin to love a show so much? Anyone else here watch this? My mom says Gene Simmons is the devil himself and says not to watch this "filth" but I love it.

I have never had the fortune, or misfortune for that matter, to take part in viewing Family Jewels. I find reality tv to be mostly dreck. There are a few PBS reality tv shows I adore...but that is because I am a PBS nerd... [Smile]

Simmons is the demon, not the devil (the others are the Star Child (Stanley), the Space Ace (Frehley), and the Cat Man (Criss)).

Ripped from wikipedia, because I couldn't remember if Gene Simmons was the demon...

Whoever invented reality tv should be dragged into the streets, and publically shot.

Thanks. This comes to show that my mom knows nothing about KISS.

I caught a part of that show where modern families were sent out to live in the prairie or something like that. That was interesting.

I normally avoid "reality" TV like the plague but I did get hooked on a little 6 parter called "Fat Men Can't Hunt" where a set of 350lb plus Brits went out to live in the Kalahari with some Bushmen

Sure it was a somewhat silly and basically voyeuristic thing and consisted mostly of the fatties whining - though props to the one guy who really wanted to learn how to do it in the hope it would help him to control his problems with overeating - he even refused the "mercy meal" halfway through because he said (perfectly rightly) it defeated the point of the exercise he had signed up for.

I haven't got a tuner because cable TV is highway robbery, so I'm not sure one way or another.

I did like "Joe Millionaire" and "Temptation Island" because the participants who were aloof and acted like big dumbasses got their comeuppances. And yes, the production team surely pushed certain relationships harder than others to get the empathy ratings up.

Now me? I was one of those PBS reality show dorks, though. I regularly email a friend who was on "Manor House" (Edwardian Country House, BBC), and he said it was awful between the conditions and the production crew being in the way (he was one of the downstairs people). I also liked "Colonial House" because half the people were drunk all of the time and they just seriously pooched everything. I missed seeing "Warrior Challenge" on PBS, which I wish I had made time for.

So, no, it's not bad to like a reality television show. Just remember it's just people performing and pretending to be real, and you're all good.

As for Gene Simmons's show? I expect they've got an image for him to maintain and he's doing it, same as Ozzy Osbourne.

I swore off reality TV when Survivor first came out. I thought it was a big gyp when people were being voted off the island and not medevac'ed.

I did, however, end up watching the third season of Beauty and the Geek.

These so-called reality shows were interesting at first. However, when they started to pop up everywhere, they became less interesting. They've sort of people the circus geeks on boobtube. The producers probably figure that they'd get more viewers the freakier the show is.

Frankly, I don't watch much network television these days. I might catch some FoodTV or HGTV or some other specialty channel.

*shrug*
