Possibly desktop background sized, but at least 800p width?
I want to flaunt it to my friend who keeps talking about Windows 8 and how MetroUI is so awesome.
Thanks, you guys rock!

Seriously,
I know someone who has been a die hard Windows fan since 2.0. Even he says Windows 8 sucks.

I don't know much about Win8 - I'm nowhere near interested enough to learn about it before it comes out.
I'm still happily using WinXP at work. ("The devil you know.") I know Win7 is inevitable, and while it's better than Vista, I still find it more awkward for a number of basic tasks. (I find Windows Explorer awkward and scattered...and I really detest the 'smart' address bar jazz.)
And to any who 'boo' the above, let me just point out that if Windows didn't have so many issues, I might not be gainfully employed. Also to set some at ease, I'll also mention that I have a MacBook at the ready sitting right besides my monitors. [It's actually the key tool in my network t-shoot/config arsenal these days. Network.prefPane is a phenomenally handy tool; locations rock!]

Here's the primary thing you need to know: They're trying to turn Windows into an OS that's suitable for a touch screen phone regardless of how bad a match that is for desktop system with a mouse, keyboard and displays that are larger than your palm.

Oh, delightful. What could possibly go wrong?
I guess they're trying to one-up Apple's iOS-ification of OS X. :/

Aaaaah!
No Start button? WTF? (Putting aside all the tired jokes about Start -> Shutdown, it's a key element of Windows - it sounds like it's going to be replaced by some gesture bollocks.)

The Metro UI is entirely designed for small form factor touch screens. A start button and menu only make sense where you have very fine control over your input (i.e. a mouse). With a small touch screen where your finger covers hundreds of pixels, large chunky icons are the way to go.
My start menu currently contains 413 shortcuts. I clearly can't wait to be forced to click and drag to scroll to the next page of 18 or fewer icons 22+ times in order to get to the last page of icons. Carpal tunnel syndrome is FUN!
There are registry keys you can edit to re-enable the start menu (see here), but it's rather idiotic to force users to do that to regain functionality that should be there in a desktop OS.
