Any chance I can get the farmer to come and muck out my stall? I do resemble the messy geek and unfortunately, my geekosphere looks the the same as his. [Eek!] [Geek]

Aww, Tut... Share the wealth with me!! If I had even one of your oldest laptops, I'd be in heaven!

(Of course cable Internet or DSL would sweeten the pot. Would it be illegal if we shared cable TV or Internet with our next-door neighbor?)

I'd originally said I'd post pics of my little setup/computer world, but I still haven't had a chance to take a pic of it.. my EMI problems prevented me from getting settled in.

When I get it all done, I'll take pics so you can all be disgusted at all my old junk. [Wink]

I don't think so as me and my neigbour at uni share a connection through a wi-fi network. Good for gaming and only one of us had to pay for network access.

Wifi isn't good for gaming, especially over long distances (neighbors), and just because you do something and don't get caught doesn't make it legal.

If I fly over to the UK and kill you and make it out clean, that doesn't make it legal (or moral).

He was only next door, still a better option than hanging cabling out of the window. With regards to the legality the university knew what some of us were doing but never mentioned anything. So we just took it as being legal.

/me checks my ISP contract.

Not a word in it to forbid wireless sharing.

I was reading an interesting article (on /. ?) recently that advocated leaving your wireless access point open (but carefully fire-walling your own computers against intrusion). The basic idea was that it makes it difficult for the authorities to prosecute you for any illicit internetting that originates from your IP, you can always claim it was some guy parked in a van out the front.

I was kind of tempted to follow their advice, but the idea of some guy with no pants on distributing kiddie porn from a van outside my house kind of grossed me out.

They may not necesarilly say no wireless sharing, but... here are a few interesting clauses from my TOS (CableVision's OptimumOnline):

quote:
20. Multiple Users: Subscriber acknowledges that by "clicking" the Acceptance icon below and/or by using the Optimum Online Service, Subscriber is agreeing to the terms and conditions of this Agreement on behalf of all persons who use the Optimum Online Service or the Services through Subscriber's Computer. Subscriber shall be responsible for ensuring that all Subscribers understand and comply with the terms and conditions of this Agreement. Subscriber acknowledges and agrees that the Subscriber is responsible and liable for any and all breaches of the terms and conditions of this Agreement, whether such breach is the result of use of the Optimum Online Service or Services.
quote:
(c) Resell, share, or otherwise distribute the Service or any portion thereof to any third party without the written consent of Cablevision. For example, Subscriber may not provide Internet access to others through a dial up connection, wireless access or host shell accounts over the Internet, provide e-mail or news service, or send a news feed.

To which one replied in a heartbeat, and with great spirit, "NEVER! *chuckle* *laugh*"

My friend gets wifi at her school but has dialup at home, so she sits her laptop right next to the window just to leech off her neighbor's wifi. despite the fact that her connection drops about every 10 minutes...hehehe

We've got wifi at our house, who's up for a wifi party in my backyard? =P

I don't encrypt my wireless network because it slows it down too much, and I don't transfer anything that I don't care about transmitting on that particular link. I do, however, have iptables rules in place on the firewall that only allows the other NIC on the network to talk to it, and drops packets from anyone else, so no one can use my wireless connection except to snoop.

Someone in my neighbourhood changed his wireless access point to have the same ID as my wireless network, presumably in an effort to get onto my network. Failed miserably, of course.

OK. I'll come out and tell the story.
I have no clue how this happened. It happened on or arround July 25th. By July 28th we convinced apple to cover it under their waranty. I just got it back a few days ago. Fun, eh?

So that's why the stupid clamshell is there.
