I'd pull the power cords from the server, then save the girl. The server can bloody well fsck itself back into a working state, or it's not much of a server. The girl looks like she will require a manual fsck.... [evil]

That is so sexist. *fwapp* - I can't believe *fwapp* that in the 21st century *fwapp* someone still thinks it's ok to dehumanize women, and regard them *fwapp* as pieces of meat *fwapp*. I'm looking at *fwapp* that particular woman *fwapp* in the comic *fwapp* right now - *fwapp* and all I can say is *fwapp* *fwapp* that she doesn't look like *fwapp* the sort of woman who deserves *fwapp* to be treated that way *fwapp* fwapp* - although she does look like a very naughty girl... *fwapp* *fwapp* *fwapp* *fwapp* ...

That picture looks almost exactly like our server and rack-o'-cables, just a few feet away from my desk! A couple of our servers crash with regularity now that we no longer have a sysadmin, though they haven't spouted smoke yet. I think we've only had one or two people get caught in the cables on the back of the rack so far.

As to whether I'd save the server or the trapped coworker, I'd definitely save the coworker, even if it was someone I didn't like. If the server burns to a crisp maybe then we can get a new one!

Damn...that is a bit of a dilemma. Really, if you're a sysadmin who gives a damn, it's not as easy a question as it might be to the average person. That said, how about mixing greycat's answer with a little system consideration - use the Magic SysRq key to get the system into a controlled rapid halt. How much peril is she in, anyway? I mean, she's entangled, but are the cables doing anything to her, or is it just an uncomfortable situation? This might be the right time for emergency Cat-5 ejection, which might control the situation if the server is being overwhelmed with network requests. Then, you save and/or get the girl. Nice girl, too [Razz] .
