Yes I am paranoid!!

How safe is what we do on the WEB?

Now that Google+ has facial recognition, how long before someone really steals your Identity.

How often and where does your likeness appear with your name.

It is said that every one has a double, what if yours has/had a checkered past and wants to start over. How much trouble could that cause you?

1) You have to enable the feature and upload a photo of yourself for it to work.

2) Identity theft doesn't require the thief to look anything like the victim. They don't even have to be the same gender.

3) Go watch Face Off. That should terrify you.

Suppose your Body/Facial double committed armed robbery?

I wouldn't care.

1) I don't have a Google+ account so I have not and can not turn on the facial recognition feature.

2) Police departments aren't going to sign up for Google+ and upload surveillance video screenshots in the hopes that the bank robber has an account, enabled facial matching and uploaded a picture of himself.

3) The bank robber would have to look like me and there are very few people who look anything at all like me.

4) The bank would have to be robbed somewhere close to where I live and the robbery would have to occur during the brief time periods when I'm not at work, logged into the internet or otherwise leaving a paper trail that documents my whereabouts.

It's like worrying about being hit by an asteroid. There's a chance, sure, but there's a much bigger chance of me winning the lottery.

Not at all safe.

There's an illusion of anonymity on the web, but that's all it is, an illusion. A while back, as an experiment, I picked a person at random from another web site I visit, and cyber-stalked them. Within about 15 minutes I was looking at satellite and street-view pictures of their home, just based on cross-referencing a few things they'd said about themselves (town, occupation, and proximity to a local landmark). I now know what kind of car they drive, and that their kids have a trampoline in the back yard.

General rule: don't say anything on the internet you wouldn't put on a sign in your front yard.

Or race.

I've successfully used a borrowed ID from a black workmate to gain admission to a supposedly secure computer centre when I'd left my card at home. I've also lent my ID to a female (and substantially less bearded than myself) colleague who used it without any problems.

The guards at the door wouldn't let anyone through without a card, but they never checked the photos.

Funny case involving gender and getting caught, though -- I was taking the train one day and a guy got busted for using his wife's monthly farecard/pass. The reason he was caught? The cards use two different colors - one per gender. D'oh!

And why not be paranoid? It's the ideology of our times...
