Xanthine: Well...Windows 7 isn't half bad...and I have yet to use Snow Leopard. (I'm writing this on Tiger, and I never really cared for Leopard nor used it in production.)

I think it all went downhill when y'all chased my fiancée away. :tears:

I'm pretty dog tired today, so the only piece of insight I'll contribute today is: Digg pwns & Twitter rocks! [Big Grin]

I haven't used Snow Leopard either. I was just being silly. My biggest beef with Windows 7 thus far is it's weird tendency to just shut down and update without even asking permission first. Very embarrassing when giving a lab meeting and suddenly the machine goes down. Fortunately, my boss had the patience to wait for me to stammer out an explanation before deciding whether or not he'd yell at me about the interruption(and he decided not to). Even more fortunately, this was a lab meeting, a nice casual sort of setting where people munch on bagels and occasionally put their feet on the table, not a job talk or student seminar or thesis defense or conference talk or any other sort of presentation where a computer malfunction leaves a bad taste in the mouths of important people.

What's this about a fiancee? Should we be congratulating you?

Oh...only if you want to send me back to the trailer by the gas station to see if she'll take me back. [Wink] (Yes, that one...) Plus, I might have to change my .sig were she ever to see it. ;P

Also, I haven't used 7 long enough to witness anything like that...but it definitely sucks less than Vista. My *favorite* feature is the fact that the "Shut Down" button actually shuts the fscking computer off. Vista has really lowered my standards. [Wink] (For the record, I've never used Vista for a production system...anywhere. [I do feel obliged to say that, otherwise I might feel dirty for talking about Vista usage.])

How the hell did I forget about that?

The standard throughout my department, before Windows 7, was to buy a new PC and hand it over to the computer dudes so they could downgrade Vista to XP. When my boss handed me my PC laptop, we were afraid it would end up needing the same treatment, but not only does Windows 7 work, Windows 7 has all these nifty back-compatibility features so I can run old software that's technically not supposed to work on anything post-XP (and no, upgrading the old software is not an option for us). The old software runs way clunkier than it does on XP, but it runs and that's good enough for my purposes with the laptop. When I need it to run fast and optimally, I use the desktops still running XP.

____ Xanthine, This only works if you are using a CRT. Plug your earphones into your Comp. Moisten a paper towel with Windex and start cleaning your Screen, with the computer on you should be able to hear the flames, as the sparks jump into your ears, that should warm you up. It sure did warm me up when I did that.

It's both.
There's no surer way of trolling a Perl fanboy than telling the truth about Perl.

I fiddled with Python while I was evaluating Django as a web portal platform. I used it long enough to decide the indentation-sensitive syntax really annoyed me. what idiot concocted that plan?

I looked into Python, Perl, and a few others, then decided to learn Ruby.

My brother has that too.

Kinda casts doubt on the simplistic dominant/recessive genetic rule I was taught in school.

Gah, Ruby! WTF?! I read about it long enough to hear about things sliding down tubes into gates or some such nonsense and ran away screaming. Maybe the dude that wrote the tutorial was just a moron, but the syntax didn't look all that appealing to me.

um...

Unless you were talking about ruby colored carpet ;-)

Ruby is not a bad language in itself, the way perl is, but it doesn't bring anything new or useful to the party. It's riding the coat tails of Rails, which seems compelling for small tasks but doesn't really scale. It's really the same sort of dead-beat dad, like PHP, that won't support you when you need it.

Of the "scripting" language, Python is probably the current best of the crop. I resisted it for several years because of bias against using indentation for syntax. But enough people I respected told me about their productivity gains, so I started using it when I could. I find it about 2-5 times as expressive per line as C++ or Java. Since you write roughly the same number of SLOC/day regardless of language, it really does double my productivity.
