One very important thing to consider is how healthy you are. If you develop a chronic condition, it is truly amazing just how quickly you can burn through tens of thousands of dollars and then start racking up debits beyond your wildest nightmares.

Affordable health care should never be taken lightly as a benefit.

Never hurts to interview NerdsOnSite while you have a job with the GeekSquad; unless you tell BestBuy about the interview, prematurely.

How much paperwork and other management work would suddenly be created for you by switching jobs? How much of the paperwork and advertising is done for you by GeekSquad that wouldn't by NerdsOnSite?

What kind of 401k does NerdOnSite offer?

You may want to create a table comparing each aspect with each job (give each a monatary for each of what the company gives (+), and what you pay(-)) and sum the collumns:

401k
Schedule
Insurance
Pay
Car and Gas Costs
Phone Usage
Bonuses/Discounts
Tax Benifits

If I remember correctly, Nerds on Site isn't really an employer-employee relationship. You basically become an independent contractor, and they get a piece of your work for getting you your contacts, and you go out and work for people. You'd be responsible for your own 401k, insurance, etc.

I've never heard of NerdsOnSite. Maybe they're not in my state/region yet?

Since you have a family, I'd hedge on the more cautious side and stay with an organization that consistently takes care of you financially (Consistent being the key term), and not with some company people haven't heard of (although, I am just *one* person).

I'm thinking, though, that you've already made your decision and just want reassurance that it's the right one. We can't make that call for you.

If it weren't about the money, where would you go/stay? Is the money enough of a good reason for you to make a change?

Assuming you live in the US and you are as you said going to be an independent contractor that is actually 50% - 7.65%=42.35 because of the employee FICA match.

Slightly OT:

Why'd your grammar and composition change when you replied to both Steen's and my posts? My mom would say you've lapsed into "slovenly speech." Any particular reason for that switch?

I'm actually currently working for Geek Squad (I'm a standard Agent, which means that I hang out out back or in our workshop outside of the Best Buy fixing hardware) and I've gotta say, it doesn't feel like a retail job to me...my department doesn't answer to the store managers, and really, our only ties to Best Buy is that our service counter is down in the store.

Um. Anyway, the health care package I got through the store is better than anything I've ever had. My friends in similar repair tech jobs are provided some seriously lacking insurance policies...I went for a physical shortly after my own insurance kicked in, had some cracked ribs patched up, X-rays to check out some bones I'd broken when I was without insurance, time with a physical therapist and an athletic health specialist to talk about my weightlifting routines, immunizations, and a consultation with a psychiatrist...all covered. How many repair techs can say that?

...that's the upside of working under a very large company like Best Buy. Smaller companies often can't afford coverage like that.

I wouldn't worry about the innocent bystanders. You know that scene in every Western where the townies are hiding in their houses peeking out the windows because they know there is going to be a shoot out? Well don't worry we'll make sure the preacher says some kind words over whatever pieces of you we can find after this all over.

Both percentages are gross income, pre-tax, so its understandable that the tax be included but for this purpose it is gross in both and each would have their respective taxes required to be taken out.
That 7.65% comes out of Best Buy's pocket now tho. That means it will be his responsibility once he has the new job.
