TFD: Am I right in recalling that Oz has the largest per-capita or per-GDP (not sure which) gambling industry in the world?

We've got the highest number of problem gamblers per capita, in any case.

The thing about Australians is that most of us will literally bet on anything. Even non gamblers will participate in the once a year Melbourne cup sweep. Pokies are extremely popular. If you go into a newsagent to buy a paper, chances are that everyone else in there is queued up to buy instant lottery tickets (ie scratchies). And don't forget "two up", which is only legal to play once a year on one of our public holidays.

Apart from which at least two of the Australian forum posters here either work or have worked in the gaming/gambling industry.

Can't confirm that, but we do have 1/5 of the worlds pokies (slot machines) which isn't bad for a country with a population about half that of California.

If you watch 'The History Of NASA' backwards, it's about a space agency that has no manned spaceflight capability, then does low-orbit flights, then lands on the Moon.

I used to work at a Casino When I worked over nights is when the truley addicted would come out. I remember seeing people sitting in the isels crying because they lost there rent or kids collage fund. Then they would come up to me and demand thier money back. (I worked in finance) But there are some funny sories. Like this guy that lost ALLOT of money, He goes out to the parking lot takes all his clothes off then drives his car thru the glass doors gets out of his car and starts running around the casino naked. I was on the other side of the casino so didn't get to see it but it's still really funny that someone would just loes it like that.

I have only been in a casino once in my life. Went there because of business conference being held in one of the ballrooms. I decided to 'blow' 20 bucks in the slots. I walked away with $400 dollars and didn't gamble again for the rest of my stay. I figured that was my 'run of luck', and didn't want to tempt 'fate' any more.

Like others, though, I am severely addicted to coffee. Ahhhh, coffee! ::drool::
