I'm looking to finally buy a domain and build my own non-angelfire website. It will be a small scale personal website (unless lots of people decide they like it, which is doubtful) for some pet projects. I'm looking to include some MySQL goodness on Linux.

I have a two part question:

Should I change my internet service to one that allows me to host my own and DIY or should I use a web hosting service to do my bidding.

If I use a web hosting service, which one would you recommend?

I like BlueDomino It also works very well with Coffee Cup that you can also get at that link. I've made a couple websites using it.

That and it's not too expensive from what I remember. I think I bought a domain name thrugh them for $10 (More popular ones would more then likely cost more)

I beilieve the servers are located in TX.

I would plug myself, but our prices aren't there to attract the 'i want cheap hosting' crowd.

However, if the site isn't mission critical, then I'd suggest your own linux box on a dsl line with a provider that doesn't suck.

Ackoo's got some good staff.

Otherwise, I'd recommend NearlyFreeSpeech.net or Dreamhost.

I'll agree on the Ackoo staff. Top notch [Smile]

I use NearlyFreeSpeech.net and am quite happy with it. I love the fact that you only pay for the bandwidth/disk space you actually use.

I've had good luck with 1and1.com. Just make sure to use the affiliate link on the GeekCulture homepage if you go with them so our BD's get a cut [Smile]
