What does it mean when a a matrix "commutes" with other matrices??

Multiplication of matrices is not commutative by default. That is, we can't say AB=BA if A and B are matrices.

If A "commutes" with B, then we can say AB=BA, which leads to some useful properties that you're familiar with from basic algebra.
