This morning I started looking up on the fire near Fort Mcmurray, There does not appear to be many major roads in or out of the area. 88k affected and may lose their homes.

There's highway 63 north and south, but still, how terrible a situation. I can't imagine how awful that would be for a community to lose so much. [Frown]

Yes one major road for all of those people to escape while the firefighters are trying to get there.

Scary stuff.
From the pictures, looks like it's mostly pines in that area. I've seen a single pine tree burn - that was scary as fsck - would not want to be anywhere near a pine forest fire.

Living here near The Huron Nat. Forest we pay attention to the woods. Pine forests will actually kill them selves off, the pine needles that have fallen off as they decay form acids and tannins that will poison the soil. Forest fires consume those dead needles and force the pine cones to release the seed for replanting the forest.

At my old high school, there was a big old pine tree at the far end of the sports field. It was a place where the smokers liked to gather, because you could see teachers coming a long way off.
I assume one of them got careless, because one day this happened to it. It went from 50 metre pine tree to 100 metre blazing inferno in about 10 seconds.
Scary.
As.
Fsck.

Now I understand that fire is a normal part of a healthy forest life cycle, I just don't ever want to see it up close.

About ten years ago one of the local farmers went to burn the ditches, using gasoline the vapors got in his clothes and when he struck the match he was knocked down. The fire spread out of control and got our fields burning about two thirds of our alfalfa. That fire burned right up to the lawn I keep 150 feet of zone mowed short around the house and barn. Sorry to say the old man succumbed to his burns.
