I hope you realise that with an 'Aye' vote, the price of oatcakes is going to go through the roof.

Anyone who doesn't have their castle cellar already filled with oatcakes purchased at pre-aye prices deserves the coming Oatpocalypse.

There will be 18 months of negotiation, divvying-up the family silverware, before independence becomes official.
We may insist the English take that 'ill-farrant biggin' as part of their share, and transport it to England at their own expense.

Closed 5 minutes ago.
Final result expected in about 8-9 hours, getting all the votes in from the islands takes time....

Nail-biting time.

Oh, and for now I'll take it as a good omen that you literally draw a Scottish flag to vote.
 -
These people gathered in the square last night, to party before the vote, now they're gathering again to await the result (at about 7am tomorrow).
It's been a long day...

in re: the flag - I saw something confusing on NYT ~yesterday. I saw a picture that I'd swear was captioned to imply it featured Scotland supporters but the flag looked like the English (not British) flag. A curious thing I've seen somewhere is an allusion to the fact that the Union Jack will be no more if Yes succeeds. I wonder if the dragon would get a place on a new flag? (Or should Wales remain the redheaded stepchild? [Wink] )

If they were flying the St George, they could have been UKIP supporters (United Kingdom Independence Party - a bunch of fascist English thugs)
Somebody just got a little confused when searching the stock photo library for SNP pics.

Many of the commonwealth countries would have a similar debate - will the top-left corner of the aussie flag need to be changed? Or should we just say to hell with it and get a proper flag like the Canadians have done?

Model referendum, mind. Two years of in-depth, passionate debate that never got nasty. Felt kinda sad seeing Alex Salmond's face on the news today. Someone should give him a hug.

Alex can leave with his head held high.

When he took leadership of the SNP in 1990, it was a 'fringe' party - 3 MPs in Westminster, 14% of the vote in Scotland, no Scottish Parliament.

24 years later, the SNP have an outright majority in the Scottish Parliament he helped create, and although he didn't achieve the full independence he (and I) hoped for, for the first time ever, the people of Scotland were *asked* what they wanted, that's a fine achievement in itself.

I wish him a long and happy retirement, he's earned it.
