Oh, so my first thought on this thread was, "WTF?!"
Then I thought it was drifting towards some political stuff that's been irksome lately and thought it a rather unlikely thing to be brought up /here/.

Now I realize you're talking about the events of today - the Malaysian jet downed in Ukraine. Yeah, murder pretty much fits there. WTF has gone wrong in this world?

Initial (semi-confirmed) reports suggest that up to 100 of the dead are AIDS researchers on their way to an international conference here in Melbourne.
Any death is a tragedy, but when it's people who've dedicated their lives to saving others, it's a double loss.

[update] - conference organizers confirm approx 100 AIDS researchers were booked on MH17

By the way that weapons system had the ability to check the IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) signal sent by the air-planes Transponder.

Yeah...but was it used by someone who knew the ins and outs of it?

You shouldn't give advanced weapons systems to folks who can just about brandish a knife. If you give a 2 year old a Sharpie to draw on a piece of paper, don't be surprised to find everything within arm's reach messed up.

Murder indeed, but when a father (Ukraine) knowingly leaves his child (plane) alone in a room with a knife-wielding homicidal maniac (airspace over war zone full of rebels armed with missiles that can take down an SR-71, let alone civilian airliner,) and the child gets hacked to pieces as expected, shouldn't part of the blame rest on the father?

Correction a BUK SA-11 CAN NOT REACH A SR-71 no way no how. The apparent not checking of IFF is the problem, spin it like you want. It stills remains not unlike a terrorist act.

Let's not forget this was an antiquated soviet-era launcher manned by a bunch of drunk paramilitaries, so chances are they only knew how to aim and pull the trigger. More importantly, the IFF signal would have been completely useless since it was a Ukrainian missile system used by the rebels to fire on Ukrainian war planes - everything would identify as friend unless we're talking about a plane from Iran or North Korea. There's absolutely no doubt it was the rebels who shot the plane down thinking it was a Ukrainian transport, but it was Herr Poroshenko and his sonderkommando Azov/Right Sector buddies who were praying for it to happen. Not closing airspace over an area where a bunch of drunks are known to be in possession of a high-powered missile system that has already taken out a whole bunch of planes, including one that is nearly the same size as a 777, is downright criminal.
