I was saddened to learn that Steve Jobs has lost his battle with cancer..
Farewell Steve, you changed the world for the better, and it will be a less awesome place without you.

The world has lost an extraordinary human being. But I will say this:
As long as people are still using their Macs and Macbooks...
As long as we listen to our iPods...
As long as we take calls on our iPhones...
As long as we watch our Apple TVs...
As long as we still use our iPads...
And as long as we use the many, many products, both hardware and software, that work with them or were inspired by them...
Then Steve Jobs will never truly die.
For those are his legacy, his gift to the world. As surely as if they were the children of his own flesh and blood.

Don't forget the animation industry. It was under Jobs that Pixar went from being a computer company to an animation studio.
I'm not an Apple fan, but it would be difficult to name someone who's had more of an impact on the tech industry. Sad to see him die so young.

I cut my technological teeth on the Apple //c in Kindergarten and First Grade. My first computer was a Mac II.
Although I don't use Apple's products anymore, I am certain that the work of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak has changed my life. Most don't think about it, but the Steve's have truly changed the world.
The next time you turn on a light bulb, think of Thomas Edison. The next time you turn on your television, think of Philo Farnsworth. And the next time you reach out your index finger to click your mouse, think of Steve Jobs.

He is at my finger tips and in my ears right now!
I learned yesterday that my cancer might be coming back. And you know what? When that happens it just reminds you to use your life well. Steve did.

I don't post much anymore, but I thought you guys might appreciate the makeshift memorial that's been set up in front of the San Francisco Apple Store in Union Square (which many around here call the Mothership... until the real one gets built).
Photos 1-7 were taken at 8am right after I got to the office (I work almost right across the street). 8-11 were taken at lunchtime when I went by).

Nice - cheers for the link. Right now, so very much has been written that one cannot find the time to read /all/ of it. That, OTOH, was a great read.
I think a key thing he hit on is Steve's track record. There's little doubt individual people and/or groups (startups or otherwise) will come up with a 'great product.' But great product after great product - that's a damn hard feat to accomplish. Even more difficult is great /new/ _consumer_ product after...
For instance, I'm sure there are cynics/haters out there for it, but I've used some crappy network gear...and I've used Cisco gear. I very much like most Cisco switches and routers I've worked on. Others like me do as well, and this is probably why they're a huge company - but their products are almost never 'game changers' like Apple's products. (And rarely consumer-facing.) I also adore Aruba networking equipment - and they continue to amaze me with their brilliant software releases...but no one outside my industry would know who they are - they'd ask if I meant the island. As such, while there are some great products out there that /aren't/ from Apple, very few continue to 'change the world,' like the stuff Steve has released. That's pretty damned impressive, and likely to be a very hard act to follow.

Very sad. After seeing how gaunt he had become recently, one knew the end was somehow coming soon, but still one held out hope that he could beat it. He was a visionary that the world won't see again.

Thanks Dman. What I like is how Pogue captures the unique combination of talents he had. Just as he said that Apple stood at the crossroads of technology and the liberal arts, so he too was as much an artist as a business genius. I cannot think of anyone else now or in the past who could fit that description. In trying to find some historical figure to compare him to, rather than the industrialists and inventors that keep being mentioned, the nearest I can get to him is Diaghilev, the great impresario. Steve's instruction to John Lasseter at Pixar to "make it great", also has echoes of Diaghilev's brief for Cocteau "Etonnez moi!"
