Asus showed off a reflective LCD based ebook device at Computex. The specs look pretty good, although the battery life is a bit worrying given how often real-world battery life translates into 40-50% of the quoted battery life. If it lives up to the specs and the text display is close enough to the quality of E-ink displays, I may have found the replacement for my Sony Reader.

(And no, the iPad is not better... different devices, different uses, apples to oranges. Not that my pointing this out will stop anyone from being a douchebag and insisting that I should get an iPad)

If you watch 'The History Of NASA' backwards, it's about a space agency that has no manned spaceflight capability, then does low-orbit flights, then lands on the Moon.

Steen: That looks cool.

Frankly, the iPad is /not/ an eBook reader†. It's simply a wondrous Internet toy‡.

† Steve says it is, but does everyone believe Steve Jobs....the man who said that no one reads books anymore?
‡ ...which kinda-sorta-in-its-spare-time can be used to read pricey books.

I have to disagree with you there Dman. I've found reading on my iPad to be a rather enjoyable experience. So much so, in fact, that I gave my Kindle to my mom.

angryjungman!

Anyway, I sort of want a dedicated ebook reader for the battery life and the non-backlit display. I sometimes read on my Eee (turn it sideways, and it's no bulkier or heavier than a hardcover), but I do find the display more tiring on the eyes than reading from paper.

Of course, I think the internet greatly exaggerates the imminent demise of paper books.
