I was saddened to find out last night (after looking on his website to see if I'd missed any new Berserker books) that one of my favourite authors, Fred Saberhagen, recently passed away at the end of June.

Fred Saberhagen was one of the last of the 'classic' style sci-fi authors. While not quite so famous as Asimov, Heinlein, Lieber, Clarke etc. his Berserker series introduced a wide range of story concepts that would 'inspire' later authors and TV series and his Dracula novels introduced the idea of an intelligent, letter writing vampire a decade or so before Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire.

That's sad. I remember reading and enjoying his "Book of Swords" series.
