John W. Backus, 82, Fortran Developer, Dies

Mr. Backus assembled and led the I.B.M. team that created Fortran, the first widely used programming language.

I'm old enough to have used Fortran extensively from 1975 to 1985.

*sigh* There goes a good one.

I can't attest to programming Fortran, but I can speak to BNF & EBNF.

Well, he's now in a position to discover the truth (or otherwise) of that old FORTRAN joke...

"GOD is REAL (unless declared INTEGER)."

/me has many fond memories of early FORTRAN hacking sessions.

I took a FORTRAN class back in college. The teacher actually gave us interesting and fun assignments. I enjoyed that class, and got an A in it.

I tried to take a COBOL class the next semester. After three weeks, we were still going over JCL. I stopped going. I didn't even bother dropping the class.
