I'm not certain how up-to-date this site may be. I read articles about aprehended and convicted child molesters every couple of months in our local paper, but my area looks clear on the site. It seems to be pretty popular out here, including a recent revelation that the owner of a local franchise of religious bookstores had been renting out his young foster son (that was particularly offensive to me because his foster son and my son are the same age).

I would certainly hope nobody lets their guard down just because nobody shows up near them on this map. We should all remember that the majority of molestations are committed by relatives and family friends. The best defense is always open, loving communication with our children.

Late last year, there was a guy parked outside the school the druidlings attend, taking pictures of kids as they left the school.

The police were called, they had a word with the guy, but there's no law against photographing people in a public place, so they took his details and let him go.

A few days later, he was back, and some of the parents had a bit of a word with him, there may have been some mention of cricket bats, and expressions of concern for his health.

He hasn't been back since, but just knowing there's creeps like that out there is deeply worrying.

Damn, there's 8 of them within a mile of my house and the school my son attends. [Eek!] What really makes me mad is that I see kids my son's age walking down the street without adult supervision. [Mad] One would think parents would be responsible.

The map is only supposed to show where sex offenders who have registered are currently living. They might not be living where they were before, and may not be released yet.

That is true, but it must be accurate at least from a year ago. I looked up the ones in my area in the phone book and there they were.

Not very accurate for my area. This website only lists two babyra^h^h^h^h convicted child molesters in my area; the Missouri Highway Patrol website has 19.

The website is good to bring this information out in the open though, and they have good tips and helps on there as well.

Slightly offtopic: Colombia holds the dishonor of having the greatest serial killer/rapist of the world: Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos. He confessed having killed around 142 kids, whom only 114 remains have been found to date.
This is the bad thing, the worse thing is that in Colombia there's no life imprisonment nor death penalty.
The worst thing is that he's going to be out of prison soon (he was arrested in 1999 and will be released in 2009), because Colombian justice is so bogus that they only gave him a 10-year murdering charge. Specialists are pretty sure he's going to kill again, but it seems that justice is more deaf than blind...

Paedophile? You Brits insert extra letters into words almost as much as I do... Monkey Dust Rocks!!

If those attacks had occurred in the U.S., we'd have to consider two things: Do they look Middle-Eastern? Do they if we squint? Because if the vigilantes had looked Middle-Eastern they'd be branded terrorists and then we'd ship them to a third-world country for torture. But if they were white we'd know that they were not a danger to society and we'd slap their wrists.

I'm just sore about that because I've managed to make a surprising number of Middle-Eastern-looking friends for someone who lives in the whitest state in the Union and I've had to watch them suffer ever since 9-11. It pisses me off that every time one of our Presidents declares war on someone or something it's immediately accepted as an invitation for discrimination.

Also, Stibbons, I agree that the problem is exaggerated. It might look better if that extra 'a' hadn't been inserted into the word, making it look slightly bigger. Seriously, though, you'll understand when you breed (if you breed- I'll respect you if you don't). That first few weeks as a parent, when every bit of phlem lodged in the wee bugger's throat makes you bolt for the hospital, really drives home the extent to which parents can overreact. The slightest hint of danger can cause a parent to go on a crying jag interspersed with moments of rage. It's not pretty. But I'm grateful for the chance to imprint my neurosese on a new little mind so that they can continue in the world after I'm dead.
