Had a meeting with my bosses today, where my yearly goals were given to me and I was told the job description for my open position. So needless to say I'm a LITTLE STRESSED. This week's theme is work questions, unless you all hate these. Then suggest some others. My feelings won't be hurt.

1. What was your first paying job?

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?

5. What do you want from a boss?

1) My dad paid me to do legal secretary stuff for him on an as-needed basis from the age 11 on. If that doesn't count, helping instruct an aikido day camp for kids.

2) I get to do science. All day long.

3) Sometimes all day long turns into all night long as well. That and I could do with a slightly less competitive field.

/me considers the rewards

On the other hand, maybe we should scratch that bit about the competition.

When I TA'ed I hated the grading.

4) You get to do science. All day long. For more than 20K/year.

5) I don't really like micro-managing. I like flexibility with regards to hours - as long as I'm coming in and getting shit done, who cares? I'm not in customer service and lives don't depend on me. I also like bosses that are accessible to their employees, laid-back enough to joke around with but tough enough to deliver a smack-down as needed. And I really like bosses that are easy on the meetings. I hate meetings. My current boss would be perfect except he has a tendency to micro-manage. He's getting better about that though.

1. What was your first paying job?

A bread delivery round.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
It's in the same time-zone as Mrs Druid and the Druidlings (my last job wasn't)

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
My team leader is a lying back-stabbing b*****d !
(really, he's been caught out several times in recent months making provably untrue accusations against me. He's also been caught deliberately sabotaging equipment I use)

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
The perfect job?
What's that?
My brothers flatmate was a travel writer, spent half her life lounging about in luxury resorts.
When I was single, I'd have thought that was the perfect job, these days... well, see my above comments about working in the same time-zone as my family.

5. What do you want from a boss?
Leave me alone and let me do my job without having to constantly check my back for knife-wounds.

1. What was your first paying job?
I worked as a cashier at Taco Bell.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
My last job was working in In-Store Marketing at Sears. I liked putting things back in order and making sure the price tag was correct and where it was supposed to be. It bugs me to no end when that stuff is wrong when I go shopping.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
I hated the fact that we were always behind getting the price changes done, and the fact that during the second half of the month I would have to do a bunch of other projects anyway.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
I have no idea.

5. What do you want from a boss?
Lots of clear communication. Really I couldn't care less if they are friendly (though that is nice) as long as I know what my goals are, how I am expected to meet them, and what exactly I am doing right and wrong.

1. What was your first paying job?
meat carver at Old Country Buffet
2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
I get to play with chemicals and it's a research position.
3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
Noone else is my age in the office (by that I mean between 20 and 30)
4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
this question is way too open ended. I would be happy doing so many different things
5. What do you want from a boss?
I just want a nice boss that leaves me alone to do my work (and maybe surf the web abit. ( like my current boss, really ))

1. What was your first paying job?
Behind the counter in a Texaco petrol station.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
I'm on friendly terms with nearly everyone, and have made some very close friends through work. And they give us sweets every time we make money [Smile] .

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
When you call people up and they're really rude to you. I have a very thin skin, and it does sting when people tell you to fsck off.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
Wanted: Comissioning Editor for McSweeneys Books. Must love reading books, and have a knack for knowing which ones to publish. Must enjoy lunching with authors and making fun of them. £25,000 p.a. Oh yeah, and you get a cute little flat in London, too.

5. What do you want from a boss?
The boss I have currently is pretty fantastic. I work well under someone who is kind and reasonable, and gives plenty of positive reinforcement. I can actually socialise with the boss I have now... we even swap boy trouble stories, which is weird, but good [Razz] .

1. What was your first paying job?
Babysitting, starting at around 13. (Would you leave your children around me?) Once the tinnitus from the constant wailing of infants drove me to insanity, I worked at a Blockbuster Video from about age 15.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
My coworkers are cool, and I like being up to my elbows in hardware every day.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
The clients. Dress code...I'd get more done if I was wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
I'd be writing and directing horror movies, and the MPAA wouldn't have to be a consideration.

5. What do you want from a boss?
A sense of humor, and puts his employees before the bad-tempered customers.

1. What was your first paying job?
A auditor of sorts for the local dumps

Well, its more complicated than that. I was a babysitter, but that was neither employment nor consistent. Then I worked at a bakery, but was fired after 2 days, so that does not count. Then I worked at the dumps, then installing restaraunt kitchens, both were hookups from my uncles. Then I was employed by a pizza restaraunt and a christmas tree lot, on the same day, so the first real job that I actually got for myself? Christmas tree guy.
2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
"prodeals"-vendors give us products for cheaper than my store gets it, sometimes up to %80 off retail, so the employees can try it out and recommend it later
also the people I work with are more like close friends than bosses/coworkers.
3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
Only 9.50 an hour (both current and last). definitly not enough to support a family
4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
Do whatever you want and get money for it!

for me this would be owning my own bike shop... some day *sigh*
5. What do you want from a boss?
Understanding

1. What was your first paying job?

I bagged groceries at an IGA in Yellowknife. I was 13 or so and developed a technique that allowed me to grope MILFs tatas as I passed them their packed bags. I was the envy of all the other dudes.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?

Being on the bleeding edge of technology, doing research etc.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?

Cow-irkers asking me if I can fix their home computer

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?

Wanted: OB/GYN apprentice to work on desert island full of horny bi-sexual Velma clones.

5. What do you want from a boss?

MOney....oh, and oral sex.

1. What was your first paying job? I had a regular babysitting job after school for a teacher. One with tax returns and stuff, I worked shelving books in a libary.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job? I love working with most of the public. Answering reference questions is like solving a puzzle. I also love training.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job? Lately things are done with very little notice or they have you work on something and then pull the rug from under you. They say Oh it is times of change. I say it takes very little time to send out an e-mail and keep people in the loop.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
It would say I get to answer reference questions for a fun public and have a great collection to pull from. It would say it is someone elses job to explain computer stuff to imeciles.

5. What do you want from a boss? Communication, a sense of humour and no micromanaging.

1. What was your first paying job?

My Grandmother owned several convenience stores here in town... my first real job was stocking shelves and keeping things clean.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?

I don't have a job right now. I just had an interview with a software company, and they basically told me that while I was more than qualified for the job, they weren't going to go any further with the interview because i am a highschool student and will be leaving town in a couple months.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?

Since I have no job, I'd say the lack of income. But my previous job I worked at a meat shop cleaning up the equipment, and the people there were some of the coolest i've ever met.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?

WANTED: professional computer geek/physicist to help write simulation software that may or may not be used, and is capable of telecommuting.

5. What do you want from a boss?

Coolness. Bosses need to be able to get things done when need be, but they also need to get along well with their employees- and they need to know more than their employees, or else they just get annoying.

1. What was your first paying job?
Birthday Party Clown. I got paid to juggle, make balloon animals, tell stupid jokes and act like an idiot in public.

Now I do all those things for free [Smile]

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
It's a toss up between the challenge of problem solving and the fact that I'm paid to actually help people and make them happy.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
Writing/re-writing databases and alarm sets for our automated monitoring system.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
Basically it would be my current job with an added button to make certain customers go away and never contact me or the company I work for again.

5. What do you want from a boss?
Trust and respect. Some guidance in what projects should be given priority, but plenty of leeway to work on things at my own discretion including projects that I come up with on my own.
I actually already get all that now.

1. What was your first paying job?
Studio Assistant in a radio station (glorified button presser on the nightshift, back in the days when they couldn't trust the computer to play the tapes and LPs properly. I was terrible at it, but it was a fun job [Smile] )

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
I'm the boss (or rather 1/2 the boss as my brother and I are both directors) so I set my own hours.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
Same as 2, my hours tend to be 24/7. I'm a sucky boss.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
humanoid wanted for fun job with too much pay and things that explode.

5. What do you want from a boss?
that gets to be quite a metaphysical question when you're self employed [Smile]

1. What was your first paying job?
I was a trolley boy for Coles for over a year. Lets say it was a good starting point.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
I love my current job. I'm working in IT with the government with scientists. It's a decent pay, flexible working hours (anywhere between 7am and 7pm), staff are fun, there are very few "problem" users, boss is on the other side of the country, so no micro-management, free use of gym/pool, it's not in the CBD so no peak hour traffic.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
Career progress is non-existant. It's a little hard to move up the heirarchy when it is all in a different state!

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
I think this dilbert says it best:

Catbert: I want a job which requires telecommuting with no definable or measureable outcomes
PHB: So basically you would sit at home and we would mail you cheques
Catbert: I was hoping for direct deposit.

Seriously though, it's not what is in the ad that makes the difference. It is who you work with and the environment that makes the difference. Try putting THAT on a job ad.

5. What do you want from a boss?
I want a boss who is a collegue, who understands that there are alternative styles to his/hers.

One who clearly defines what the result is to be, and then lets you get on with it, while providing the support and resources that you need.

1. What was your first paying job?
Trueing spokes at a bike shop for a couple hours a week. I was 9.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
Everything. I love the flexible hours, the nice balance between tech and creativity, my zany co-workers, the location (right downtown, on the ocean, 10 minute walk from home)...

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
The occassional bouts of absolute boredom when things are slow.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
Wanted: graphic designer for small but powerful advertising agency/graphic design firm. Fast paced environment. Set own hours. Sense of humour a necessity.

5. What do you want from a boss?
Clarity and trust. Tell me what you need and when you need it, then let me do my thing.

1. What was your first paying job?
Working as a 'Ranger' at an urban 'Nature Park' - a government scheme.... I'll bet you can guess the rest!

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
Last job? - nothing.
Current Job? - It's a reasonably pinko, lefty, right-on sort of establishment.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
Last job? - pay, conditions, everything!
Current Job? - it's a sit-down, chair-with-wheels kind of office job.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
"Don't bother turning up, we'll pay you anyway."

5. What do you want from a boss?
A bit of respect.

1. What was your first paying job?[qb] I wrote some programs to produce tables of what it would cost the school district over the next N years if the teacher's union got varying amounts of pay increases. I was in high school at the time.

[qb]2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
I can pretty much make up my job function as I go along.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job? My boss is more interested in keeping control of the company than making a lot of money.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say? If you ever put what text editors you use in a resume, do not apply.

5. What do you want from a boss? Someone who likes to go to meetings more than write code.

1. What was your first paying job?

When I was in grade school a much older girl down the street used to give me a quarter for sexual favors. And yes, I do know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop, but it's much less for me thanks to all the practice [Razz]

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?

Getting to train new people in the ways of BDSM is always a real joy. I'd do it for free, and in most cases I do. As for my other job, the only joy I get there is tormenting the people around me.

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?

In both jobs I'd have to say dealing with the really stupid people is about the most trying thing I've ever had to do. It amazes me that they even allow people so brainless to venture around without proper supervision, let alone hold a management position.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?

Single male needed to train future porn stars. Must be willing to work long hours with hightly attractive 18 year olds who are looking to break all inhibitions. Experienced tongue a plus!!! Pay is related to number of girls trained.

5. What do you want from a boss?

Big breasts, firm behind, slim waist, and lips that could suck light from a black hole. Well, only if she is willing to share all that with me of course [Happytears]

Current job? The work. Last Job? Nothing.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?

Wanted: Someone to take a bunch of my money to go off and make me a nice return.

1. What was your first paying job?
Babysitting or Cook at Pizza Hut

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
Laid back people and atmosphere

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
One of our techs is seriously unqualified, everyone knows it, and I'm one of the few people paitent enough to walk him through things he should already know.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
Unrealistically:
$1000 an hour, coding something "fun"...
Not quite sure what I'd define "fun" as yet...

Realistically:
Applications Programmer or System Admin in a largish tech company

Eventually:
Owner of own buissness... Have idea of what it would be, but it's not fleshed out yet, and I don't have the capital needed to get going.

5. What do you want from a boss?
Million dollar bonus??? PLEASE?!?

thanks, I've been really busy lately and haven't had much time to post. Right now I've just moved in what is my first house and I'm without net service [Happytears] but I still check in on the weekends and occasionally at work [Cool]

1. What was your first paying job?
I was a file clerk in an insurance broker's office.

2. What do you love best about your current job or last job?
The people are great; really fun and interesting. That makes even the most boring project go by quickly. [Smile]

3. What do you hate about your current job or last job?
The commute -- 2 hours one way, on a good day. Don't ask why I put up with it; it's complicated.

4. If you could write an ad for your perfect job what would it say?
Not really sure...though I'll know it when I see it.

5. What do you want from a boss?
A personality. That and a willingness to get to know their employees and work on the same level with them occasionally. I hate bosses who treat their offices like ivory towers.
