http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/

Apple has just released a 1 GB model of the nano for $149 (USD) -- that might make me seriously think twice about acquiring one. Also, for anyone with academic connections, it's $129.

/me does his damndest to stay away from the Apple store...I'm having a harder time saying "I can't justify the expense."

This isn't fair! I can't keep up!

/me looks fondly at my rather small iPod 'shuffle' [Frown]

You can still get regular MP3 players on eBay for less than half that including shipping (and often for just a fraction of that including shipping).

... is it really worth the extra money for the 'coolness' factor?

2 words:
Hell...yes.

Me thinks you've not actually held one or played with it. It is a damn cool thing. My only other concern is 'where do I put it, as well as headphones?' Though honestly, I could probably just put it in my shirt pocket and never feel it. [Wink]

Definitely.

[edit]
1G iPod shuffle from Apple Australia: $A 149
1G 'own brand' USB drive from a local office supply store: $A 149
Listening to the music of my choice wherever I go: Priceless.

(and I could get 10% off the iPod by claiming the education discount)

Hmmm... Looks like a good deal.

/me checks iTunes

1.83gb, 318 songs, 1 day.

Well I suppose I could just leave the Mahler at home.

Hmm...I knew that couldn't be right. Google converted A$149 to US$111. I'm not expecting Apple to be that charitable. Sorry...but it's A$219 before any discount. That's US$169. I was about to be stunned if 1 GB USB keys were that expensive over there. Here, I can get a 1 GB USB key for somewhere between $30 and $50. That's definitely a better deal than the nano, but obviously the nano has a bit more to offer. [Smile]

Speaking of priceless: A somewhat NSFW video. (only based on some words present, and sensitive managerial folks, or what not.)

Those would be prices for the nano, I was quoting prices for the shuffle. $A 149 is correct.

They can be had for under $A 100 at 'The Dodgy Brothers' (generic aussie term for small seedy discounters) but major chains tend to be more expensive. We do get ripped off here in oz though, it's depressing seeing how cheap some things are elsewhere. Technical books are especially bad, take the $US price and double it.

Doh! I misread that. Sorry...my mind is on that cute little nano. It would make a /really/ sweet address book, don't ya know? [Wink]

Well, i think it sucks. I mean, look at the shuffle! the 1GB is now as cheap as the 512 that i bought when it first came out! My investment has DEPRECIATED! It's a darn good thing I hopped on the Video train when I did.

Because it's an iPod, there's a huge accessory aftermarket, and I know exactly where to get a waterproof (not merely splash-resistant) case for the thing. That's important to me, since I killed my iPod shuffle once already!

*sniff* *sniff*

What's that I smell? Smells like a planted review and cries for linked interest.
