And this week's award for geekiest geek toy goes to...

http://www.audioscrobbler.com/

"Audioscrobbler builds a profile of your musical taste using a plugin for your media player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..). Plugins send the name of every song you play to the Audioscrobbler server, which updates your musical profile with the new song. Every person with a plugin has their own page on this site which shows their listening statistics. The system automatically matches you to people with a similar music taste, and generates personalised recommendations."

I heard the originator guy talk at NotCon 04 but only got around to trying it out a couple of weeks ago... It's strangely addictive, in an anally-retentive kind of way...

Ooh, I love the concept. I wonder how it handles the scenario where a song you aren't that keen on comes on and you quickly skip to the next one.

And yep, I'd definitely be interested in a GC group.

Edit: And here I am.

Edit of Edit: Apparently you have to let at least 50% of a track play for it to be submitted, and any manual skipping/seeking disables it. Clever.

I've signed up. I don't listen to a lot of music on my computer (that's what the iPod is for), but ... we'll see.

dont forget last.fm!

comes with your audioscrobbler account, you get a free month of personal radio(donation required afterwards) and unlimited profile radio.

Click one of the links at your last.fm page (http//last.fm/user/[audio scrobblername]. profile radio is what you listen to and similar music, personal radio is just what you listen to. check mine out at my sig.

edit:

last.fm has amazing streaming quality too, sounds great for free online radio (its great at school, esp if you dont ahve a mp3 player)

I haven't had time to look at the FAQs, so don't murder me, but I have a few initial quesitons:

If I register on the computer at work, does that mean I have to listen to music at work? Or must I wait and register at home?

What happens if I use more than one music player? Does iTunes for Windows count?

Must I be online when I listen to music or can I update my listening habits once a day (when I dial in to check e-mail)?

It's just like GC, registration simply creates a user on their system, you can access it from whichever machine(s) you wish.

Shouldn't be an issue as long as you aren't playing things on more than one machine simultaneously (I read somewhere that it checks whether it's physically possible to listen to as much music as a userid is submitting). As long as a client(ie plugin) is available, you're set.

I guess it depends how the plugin is written. Theoretically it should be able to queue the updates until the network is available, but I'm not sure which plugins support it. It's very nice, though.

Well I will sign up from home, and then really have fun.

Try over 100 hours of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock, and that is just the mp3s. If I start playing my CDs it about trebles that.

Yes, I am a total Metal Head.

I was a huge metal fan and still am, but I listen to absolutely anything non-pop these days.

I'm going to have to go to Utopia records and buy up all their Dio and Rainbow.

Ronny James Dio makes me swoon (in a totally heterosexual way).

Seen both in concert, and Deep Purple as well, yep, that old.

Actually, I prefer Dio's records than his concerts. Ronnie James has an infuriating, IMO, habit of starting on song, switching in the middle to another, then another before finally coming back and finishing the first.
Ok, the little guy can sing though [Wink] .

Rhonwyyn iTunes for mac queues up quite a bit, my Airport is fussy, and its submitted 20 songs or more at once when it comes back online. You may have to adjust the settings though. And you have to submit from the computer you were listening on.

There's no way any of the stuff I listen to is going to get in the top 20. Maybe if I make the TTBs! theme available again, we can push it into the charts! [Razz]

So now the GC group has more than 10 members, a weekly chart should be generated... *That'll* be something to see ;-)

Right, I'm off home to start playing as much pop music as I can find to offset the Scary Metal Alliance that seems to be coalescing into existence!
