I have a difficult decision to make and you may be able to help me.
A while ago i sent for some info on some sports yachts and the company sent me the info and the pricelist, unfortunatly i dont have 3-4 million in the bank so i thought no more of it. Last week in the post i recieved an invitation to go for a day out on the yacht i want including champagne lunch! [Eek!] So should i accept brush off the suit and take the mrs for a day out she will never forget or just forget it?

Has anyone else done anything like this??

I think it would be best if you sent an official representive instead, ... say, Nitrozac and I?

You don't want to appear too eager. [Big Grin]

hello and welcome, I am dyslexic and find the spellbound extension for firefox a really useful extention as it makes a pretty good spellchecker. Right time to check the usual stuff has been mentioned; cosmic bong, coffee, cake, more in the back, right I think that is about it apart to say I hope you enjoy your stay here

WTF kind of yachts are we talking about? My family has sailed cruising yachts since my great-grand dad, (my grandfather actually lived on a boat - no house - during 5th grade, b/c of the Depression). And yet, ours are definitely not in the 6-7 figure range.

Hey Mage,

When did you last look at the price of a "passable" live on boat"?

I could own a few Ferraris for what they ask...

I can probably buy a small flat (appartment) cheaper...

Like I even have the money for a shoe shine right now...

Boats cost big $$$, more than luxury autos - "big style"... Sheesh, last I looked a poxy little dinghy cost nearly as much as a cheap UK motor vehicle (read sub compact if you are in the Americas...)

A 36 foot/11 meter boat that you can live on (as my family does in the summer) built in the 70s costs around $30,000-$60,000 (US). More modern boats cost slightly more. No more than a cottage. And if you factor in the whole "one time cost plus maintenance" thing, it's actually not that much more expensive than the whole "Cruise ship/hotel" thing that a lot of people do every.

Not cheap, but definitely not in the millions. Unless we're talking about a 50-70 foot (too lazy to convert to metric) yacht, which would be a millionaire playboy's toy.

I'm talking about sailboats, BTW. Motoring is for harbors only ;-). However, I think motorboats are comparably priced.

Let them be stupid - the market will sort it out.

Whoo hoo

I'm selling up and bringing my *HUGE* consumer debt to wherever you are...

Right now in the UK you can't buy a "starter home" read poky 1-2 bed flung up in a week bricks and mortar for less than £100,000 where I am ( errrm about 170,000 USD I think...)

[Eek!]

Back to the topic at hand - before they let you on a Yacht like that you'll need some Sporty Sperrys, a Jaunty Jackey, Crisp White Linen Slacks, a Nautical Neckscarf and of course a Pretentious Pipe.

Cost $1738 (£926.25) (1,343.53 Euro)

Yuckin' it up with the Yacht set - Priceless!

I think I should go to where you are. You can't get a run down "starter home" here for less than $350,000 (probably around £200,000).

And disgruntled goat, go on the ride. While you're there don't mention money or any intentions you may or may not have w/regard to the boat. They will probably try to pressure you into buying it, but that's the wonderful thing about knowing you can't afford something--you couldn't give in even if you wanted to! [Big Grin] It sounds like fun, enjoy.

You should both come over here.

Saw in the paper the other day, the house one of my school friends lived in sold for $A 220K ($US 170K, £92K). Largish 1970's brick veneer, 4 bedrooms, reasonably large garden, in a quiet street, lower middle-class suburb 30km/20 miles from city centre.

Dunno about the USA or UK, but here in oz, inner-city life is very fashionable at the moment. A tiny 2 bedroom slum (and I do mean 'slum') anywhere near where I live now would cost around $A350K

The one i want to look at is a 75 foot princess sports yacht, there is one second hand at 3.7 million!! These things do come fully loaded though with plasma t.v`s and a bar and all sorts of electric gagets i dont understand. It says it has auto pilot so i could get in, get drunk, sleep and wake up somewhere warm. I also think they come with 5-6 sexy ladies in bikinis but they could be optional extras [Wink]

I'm always the party pooper. While I think it would be awesome to go for a ride on their dime, my ethics might not let me. After all, you have NO intention of buying the yacht. Just think of what they have to spend in order to take you out. While you will certainly not be using a full tank, a tank of diesel fuel for one of those is about $1200 (US). That's one tank. They usually have two. Then add in what they have to pay for food, crew salaries, even port taxes - and you're looking at a hefty bill. That's why most places do a credit check before they offer something like that. (Are you sure you don't have 10 million squirreled away somewhere? I once found $10 in a coat I hadn't worn since the winter before...)

You may argue that they take this cost as an acceptable risk and figure it into the budget and all - but that's when they actually have a chance of selling the boat. Most yacht dealers I know have OK margins - but not to blow on taking people for charity rides. Like I said, I hate being Captain Buzzkill® and the Bringdown Kids , but I think it would be disingenuous of you at the least to take the ride.

That being said - if you do go, can we get pictures? [Big Grin]

I can see it now, my yacht moored in monaco with the sun shining, the seagulls soaring overhead and spungo lay on deck wearing a studded leather thong bikini and a smile [Eek!] Well i suppose it would keep the flies away from my food.
