From the Veland Show...

"One of the interesting new features of the forthcoming revision of Mac OS X, is of course the Dashboard widgets. Sorry, gadgets. As we all know, they are not a rip-off of Konfabulator, but rather a 21 century implementation of Desktop Accessories. And combined with Exposť you have a killer combination. One of the most interesting things about these new gadgets are that they are actually small web pages rendered with the built in Web-kit, their functionality coming from JavaScript. That means that everyone with some knowledge of JavaScript or even a lowly web-designer (like me) can write fully featured Mac OS X apps."

See em!

I thought the whole point was that they weren't JS? If they're JS, they're a /complete/ rip off of Konfabulator, and may very well be subject to the bugginess I've heard about the latter.

Dragonman, Konfabulator uses its own javascript engine + custom XML for its widgets, meaning each one runs as a seperate CPU and memory consuming app. Dashboard's gadgets run under webkit. ie they're webpages running under the same engine as Safari etc. and thus can be designed with html, javascript (as in the Javascript built into the OS) as well as some extra Cocoa accessibility. The big plus side of this (apart from stable Gadgets and low CPU/memory hits) is that anyone who can put together a web page can create a Gadget!

There's a very good article debunking the 'Dashboard ripped off Konfabulator' myth which makes me very glad that Apple didn't just buy Konfabulator.

The most important of which is the element of surprise.
