Now there was a movie that caught the zietgiest, except that there's nothing wrong with having a fucking big television!

Back on thread, the Czech Republic, not one of Europes major teams already qualify for the next stage of the tournament, at the expense of either Germany or Holland; but most likely Germany

And the book's even better. It's full of great, memorable quotes, like : "That Begbie's a f*cking psycho, but you know, he's a mate, so what can you do?"

Definitely the best British movie since The Ladykillers (the Alec Guinness original).

Yes, but I'm from Edinburgh and I don't even find Irvine Welsh 'light reading'

I'm sure if it was a movie about a bunch of rednecks I'd be struggling to follow what was being said

Wow, did anyone watch the Netherlands/Czech Republic game yesterday?

Today's action resulted in Portugal and Greece going through with Spain being their usual disappointing self and falling out.

There was another match involving this team. The opponents fought them to a tie, but they still had to pack their trunks and go. [Big Grin]

As a non-Scot, but Hibernophile (?), I hope I'm allowed to say that line is by far the best moment of the film, IMHO!

I'm proud to say I can still only tick about twelve or thirteen out of those 23 (holding out against the fucking big television helps on the mind numbing, spirit crushing game show front)... but embarrassed to admit I have just chosen fixed interest mortgage repayments [blush]

Top tip for any international footy competition: go out with someone half foreign, then you get a Plan B in case England turn out to be crap! [Big Grin]

TFD, I don't follow football (soccer in the US) at all, but I still somehow knew that Brazil is the cream of the crop.

spungo, about half those names looked Serbian. Who did England beat? Serbia? Croatia?

The English defeated the Croats 4-2 thanks to 18 year old sensation Wayne Rooney. Those names aren't players though, they're Croatian "celebrities". I actually heard Goran Ivanisevic talk on BBC FiveLive and he was cautiously optimistic before the game. Poor guy [Wink]

And Spungo I was surprised to see your list of Croatian celebs did not include Severina Vuckovic. [Wink]

Yeah, well, it's a bit annoying seeing them hanging out of pub windows and passing Ford Escorts, but it's basically just a football flag now, isn't it? It doesn't mean anything outside tribalism - anyway, we're all continentals, now. (Nobody ever says "God bless the semi-united pan-European quasi-federation", do they? )

They're bloody offensive weapons! I got one round the back of the head while i was walking down to get a new mouse. Some bastard lorry driver had wound his window down so it was hanging out onto the pavement at head height [Mad]

Well as an outcast from the tribe, to me they represent all that is worst about the UK. This notion of mine may in no small part be due to the fact that the two organisations promoting these items most heavily are Rupert Murdoch's Sun newspaper and Carling lager, the scrapings off the toilet bowl of our popular culture.

However, Call, have you noticed how quiet the roads are in Brighton when an England match is on. I went and saw a preview of Ladykillers on Monday evening at the marina and there was hardly any traffic on the roads.

Then got home just in time to see the lads win.
Woo-hoo.

Shame that Germany are out, I guess it means we have to face France in the final instead.
