This fasting period is almost over. YAY! And much to my joy, I have been going strong. I have given up all products produced by an animal. total veagan. One week left, and i cannot wait.

Not only that but I will be 18 on the 27th. This month is really shaping up for me.

What have you given up for lent?

Aren't you not supposed to tell? I'm not Catholic so I could be wrong, but I thought that when you fasted or gave up something for God that you were supposed to keep it secret that way all the glory would be for God instead of you getting praised for being pious.

Makes sense and all but I have never heard that before. This is the first thing that I have ever given up and it is more of a test of my individual strength than a fast for god. I am pretty much using lent as an excuse and a period of time for which i can do so. I honestly don't even believe in the church, God or any other "All powerful being".

Me, I could never do the vegan thing. I tried going vegetarian for a little while, but after about 3 days I found myself staring at a cow pasture, salivating, and plotting how best to run the beastie down...

I went back to my normal diet that night. [Big Grin] Congrats on making it through an entire month; you are a stronger person than I.

Dude, quit thinking about your dad's meat - that's very disturbing...

Someone told me that you are not supposed to give up the thing you give up for lent on Sundays. Something about celebrating God that day and not self-deprivation. Otherwise lent would be longer than 40 days.

Anybody heard of this?

During the early French settlement of Canada, the Beaver was officially declared to be a fish, so it could be eaten during Lent

Oh dear lord csk...was that another WWCVD moment?

I'm told that in Peru capybaras (think giant guinea pig) were declared to be fish so people could eat them on Fridays. They live in water...

Yup. Your lenten promise doesn't have to be observed on Sunday, because that'd make it 46 days instead of 40. Also, Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest and celebration, not one of fasting.

Oddly it seemed that people around me didn;t give much up for lent this year. I'm not one to pounce on them for it, as I'm ever so slightly an atheist myself, but even at my Catholic school no one seems very filled with lenten ferver as in other years.

But, the Pope just issued a statement warning against watching sports on Sundays. Take that Final 4 types!
