The rest of the country goes 3 other ways. [Razz]

Edit: Looks like my S.O. ends up in the E.U. Will we need passports to visit?

LOL.

Even assuming that he's correct and the U.S. will disintegrate, why does he assume that segments of states would go to other countries?

Actually, the way he says how the US would join other states just shows how far off he is. If anything, New-England and Northern Pacific may join Canada (maybe Michigan too), parts of New Mexico, Arizona and Texas might join Mexico (and Southern California?)from pressure from the Mexican population - although not without some fighting - while the rest would probably regroup into a totally red New United States of America. (Or would it be the Union of States of America?)

But the center to join Canada? They'd be ever more to the right than Alberta! And I'm just laughing at the idea of California to fall under China's influence. As if they'd give up their liberal ways. Also, am I the only one who thinks Hawai would sooner join New Zealand or Australia than Japan? Language, culture... It would be a smaller leap, ideologically (althoug a greater one geographically). Or they may just decide they can stand on their own - which would probably be true.

Hmmm, I wonder if the Cajun-country Louisianna would join Canada too... After all, they are cousins with New-Brunswick and Nova Scotia. (Probably not.)

Instead, I expect Obama to teach Americans that they can live together, even when they disagree. And I am not even a specialist. I guess the professor Panarin thinks that if USSR can disintegrate, so can USA. I'll chalk this one under schadenfreude.

Edit: I had forgotten about Alaska. Who would have thought that Russia will get its hands on it if the USA disintegrates? (Still mad they sold it in the first place, maybe? [Razz] ) Well, at least Sarah Palin would finally get some real international experience! [Big Grin] (She may find it harder to run against Putin, though. [crazy] )

Utah as part of China ... o.O

I think there would be a teensy culture clash between the Mormons and the Chinese.

Because that's what happened to the USSR.

Note the article talks about regions "falling under the influence of" the other nations, not necessarily being officially annexed by them.

The guy's predictions might look pretty wild today, but 20 years ago who would have guessed that Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, etc would one day be NATO members, or that the US Air Force would have a base in (the then Soviet Republic of) Kyrgyzstan?

Most of it is pretty whacky. Even if there was another civil war and the states broke up, they'd more likely end up as self governing mini-states with ties to one another.

Hawaii is likely to end up Japanese though, it's around 50% Japanese owned as is, so if there was a break-up I'd imagine it would get converted into one big golf course.

Thanks, but I think we'll form the Sovereign Republic of NY. [Big Grin] [Wink]

But really, I think this is just a /wee/ bit premature...

Surely that should be "Sovereign Republic of NY, Sovereign Republic of NY." (That is, so good they'll name it twice!) [Wink]

Reading Zwilink and GeekyGoodness, I'm thinking if there were another civil war that the north would once again prevale but only this time we'd have the good sense to sell the south to France. For no other reason than the folks in the south would really hate it. Plus we could have a real Riviera instead of a redneck riviera.

He's got it all wrong. Northern CA and the PacNW would either finally form Cascadia or join Canada. Southern CA, AZ, NM, and Texas would go back to Mexico. CO and UT might as well. Not so sure about the rest of the West and the Midwest. Louisiana Purchase back to France, maybe? The Southeast and Mid-Atlantic I'm not so sure about. New England would probably end up latching onto Canada as well.

Please note that geekygoddess was shooting for a math pun. I'm not sure if her tangent actually expressed a wish for a split, but I'd like to think that time has progressed, and our states shouldn't be polar opposites, regardless what of what a few fools indicate.

I'm with geekygoddess on this one, the South was never keen on integration.
