Is it ever not on fire?

Australia is very large and much of it is very dry.

What grumpy said.
Plus...

Sydney's had some real trouble with fire in recent days.

Sydney's particularly vulnerable because of it's layout...

1. There are some big pockets of bushland surrounded by suburbs, eg here

2. There are rivers and inlets that can only be crossed at certain places, creating bottlenecks that hamper evacuation and emergency crews.

Also of note, all of the major aussie media organisations are based there, so Sydney news gets covered more, in the same way that NY and CA news gets covered more in the USA.

I went to the Blue Mountains when I was in Australia. Sad to see them burning now.

On a side note, the leeches that you'd get just from walking through the forest were insane!
