Router Settings? For three years I have been using one of those MiFi devises for an ISP. There is a problem with using such a devise. How big is the data pipe to the closest tower, is the cell provider aware of over usage (too many subscribers on at one time). When we got this thing I was really pleased, it easily trumped Dial-up. Now not so much. at three fifteen when the schools let out and all the kids with smart phones start texting and E-Mailing each other Dial-up is way faster. I have notified the provider, they claim that letting me know if they plan on upgrading their equipment that their competition might gain an edge. So I plan on going with the competition, I have invited family and friends that use different carriers to visit, and will monitor their levels of service in real world conditions.

Now for the question, does any one have a good list of ports to close and features to turn off? I want to be secure but still able to access the internet,

As a side note we know longer do on-line banking or stock exchanges, I will call the bank or financial service and have their agents do my bidding.

Well we had the gathering of data and opinions, a choice has been made and we have gone with a different Cellular provider. Data during normal high usage times is twice that of the best of the old devise.

I would still like a list of ports to shut off and other things to do to make our private home network safe and secure.

Please.

Dr. Who, Thank you, thank you. I had forgotten about Gibson research and their on line tests. Any way our new MiFi devise appears to non responsive to outside requests.

I have trouble trusting information on any website that has not updated thier design since 1995.

*snickers* Try http://zombo.com/ if you need something a little newer.

Well, it's Steve Gibson...he's been selling the same snake water for quite some time. (I'm sure there's some utility to his Shields Up, but I prefer to use nmap.)
