Ok, so my current desktop is absolutely bollocks and is the absolute worse for digital art. This year, I am hoping to convince my family to buy me a laptop, since i'm going to college and will need one anyways. I would say that I would be able to spend between 1000-2000 dollars and it would need to be able to keep up with a lot of photoshop, illustrator, and flash work, along with my library of music.

I'd recommend a 2.66 GHz MacBook Pro which costs just under 2K, but since Arrandale is just around the corner, you should wait if possible for those sweet Nehalem processors.

Is the interface extremely different from a PC?

Look for a slightly used HP 8730w on ebay, you should be able to find a fairly loaded one for around a grand - very similar to a 17" MBP and longer warranty for much less. Battery life would be worse, but I don't think it matters that much for a desktop-replacement machine.
