Okay, I just reformatted my laptop (vista 64 bit) and I had to install windows live. Well all of a sudden my contact list has deleted itself on me (twice) and it's sending out spam to everyone on the list. How do i fix the problem?

Since you have reformatted and reinstalled, I would guess that they have got your MSN ID and password, and have hijacked it to spam your contacts and others. They send messages to your contact list with messages like "See these pics from the awesome party last night <dodgy link>". Your friends are then sent to a site which looks a little like the MSN Live site, which they have to log onto with their MSN ID and password, which then also infects their PC, and they also get the Live account details. Two for the price of one! And so it goes on. It is a simple scam which relies on you trusting messages which appear to come from a friend.

Log into your account, change the password, and see if that fixes the problem.

It seems it's normal, MS makes small changes to the MSNP quite regularly, resulting in these "netsplits".

EDIT: Change your password, I din't read the spam part.

Kill the old account and get a new one. It sounds like yours has been compromised.

This happened to my Yahoo! mail account. I discovered recently that all of my addresses were deleted. It really sucks, but there's nothing I can do about it. [Frown]

I've changed my password, right now I am just waiting a couple days to see if w/e this is, attacks again.

It's really annoying because not only does it remove all my contacts from my contacts list but it sends out a spam email to everyone in my contact list. If it happens again I will sadly need to create a new account [Frown]

Fingers crossed!!

Don't just change the paassword. Verify the contact email, change the "secret" question and response, etc. Otherwise you could just wind up with the new password being given to whoever.

And while you're changing these things, make up fake answers to the security questions just in case you wind up mentioning the real answers in a post or blog entry somewhere.
