Can anybody point me in the right direction?

I'm wondering how you set up your own web site and searches are giving mixed results. I'm starting to understand basic code but most importantly, Im wondering if it's necessary to have to pay.

I'd love to try and design my own site (for better or worse!) and run it off my Mac - and/or external drive.

Clearly I'm a total novice but I do know that you can use your Mac as an FTP host so I'm hoping there's a way.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

James

Umm well I know there are many free sites out there which will give you a page. But this is more of an equivalent to a blog and/or myspace and facebook type thing. Just something for young teenagers to play around with without actually paying real money.

To have a regular site it will typically cost 10/20 dollars for the domain name and 100 dollars a year for the hosting (roughly). I recommend Godaddy for the domain name and Ix Web hosting for the hosting.

Yeah if Iím not mistaken you can use your own computer as a host (a quick google search will give you the tutorials needed) but be aware that unless you want to spend a lot of money this option will totally be a learning experience and nothing really more.

Go here.

Build your web pages.

Then go here.

Done

There might be a couple minor details I glossed over, but you get the general idea.

Well hosting and creation are two different worlds, first things first. Get apache running on your box, if you can pull this off your doing great?
Next create your content, start with one or two pages, put some words and pictures and link them etc.
Ok then once this is working flawlessly your ready to go live, Dynamic DNS per Commander Shroom is awesome, however some details that you need to know.
Some ISP's really really frown on you bringing up your own site in their space. Example comcrak will redirect your port 80 traffic back to their servers and 400 you. (It really pisses me off)
So be sure in read the fine print before you turn it up.
Some other details, bandwidth, security, and stable platform.

Bandwidth upstream from most DSL and Cable providers is limited to about 256K verses the 10 or 15Mb down. So running a site with large pictures or lots of content is bad karma.

Security, hosting a web site is dandy until some script kiddy comes in and busts it wide open and uses your machine to hack homeland security... and youíre sitting in a room with suits trying to explain it wasnít you hosting the kiddy porn and hacking official government sites.
now the this really happening is minimal, however still very possible... I have spent many a day and night cleaning up after very sloppy coding, and poor security practices.

Lastly stable platforms.
Yep that hardware. if you have the slightest notion that itís going to be more that just your immediate family looking at this site, maybe posting to it... donít for whatever reason do it on your only computer!!!!!

Buy a junker for 10 bucks load open suse or fedora, or whatever you have for an OS... donít use the one and only box you have all of your email etc on to be the server.....
Well if you have more questions or need further clarification just let me know... itís what I do.

Aww geez hal, go busting up all my facetious fun.

But I love the kiddie porn bit. I worked for a school district at one time, and our main county office was hosting a Chinese porn site for a little while. I got a big kick out of that one.

We always ran a CS server at my HS. Half of us ran tech support anyway for the school, as no one there knew how to fix anything, and the central office ppl didnt know much more. They took it down for a week, but we just moved what port it was. They never thought to actually trace where the server was...

Also, check and see if your work/school allots you space. Depending on what you want to do, they take all the hard stuff out of it, and all you have to do is upload your webpages to a server they manage.

The best one was the 10 level deep directory structure the guy thougt he was going to hide.

The Mac he was using, was date and time stamping his personal info on all the pic's he uploaded. made my job real easy.

The part i enjoyed the most was talking to him and discovering he paid (BIG $$$$) for all the porn he copied from other sites to resell as his own.

At what point did he forget that we monitor network traffic, and when his box got 30 to 40 hits, HP Openview went nutz, along with IDS.

Big Brother and MRTG are your networking friend

I can understand exactly why he didn't think he would be caught.

He was on a Mac. Supposedly, Macs are far superior to things such as net monitoring software and of course no IT person could ever figure out how to use one. That is because Mac users are a special and superior breed of computer user...

Or at least that has been my experience. Usually about 30 seconds before I show them how to really get around in one of those things.
